Thumbing through the 5th edition Monster Manual, I found another monster, that looks easy to craft. For this I just created a likely shape by applying hot glue onto some scraps of clear plastic - a straw from an amusement park slush ice I think. By dunking it in water to set it quickly I got some bulk and a few strands to look like the tentacles/roots. Then a quick cover of PVA and classic green model railroad flock. On top of that went some drops of varnish to vary the texture and reflect some light here and there. And it also got some stands of hot glue for roots and such. After drying I painted the exposed hot glue brown and added some more flocking - both static grass and the old flock. Once that dries up, I'll go through my basing supplies to add some variation to it. And maybe I should see if I can get a good shot from another angle ;-)

it looks great as is, but you might consider gilding the lily by adding some teeny mushrooms... I wouldn't try for teeth, I think it looks better without

Might work slightly easier to start with a wire frame and a bag of the various moss from the floral section of the craft store...

If you're done with it, I would suggest a few layers of spray on gloss and then matte varnish. It looks great, just seal it up so that it doesn't shed anywhere.

Nice work! I used a green army man as a armature and covered him with flock a while ago. Probably should have left off the eyes and teeth.

Now that's a scary shambler - bet he's got spec ops training, and the eyes just say night vision to me :-)

Just for your informations. there is no teeth, there is no eyes, there is no mouth per say. a shambling mound is just that, a mound of plant life that eats the nutrients of anything stuck in it.
it doesn't see, but use blind sights to feel the creatures life. it is not sentient in the way it thinks, it only wants to eat and eat. swallowing anything that dare stand in its way. basically its a gelatinous cube except its round and made out of plant matters.

Yeah, but most people anthropomorphize their monster minis, otherwise it looks like a pile of crap.

not sure if you meant that as an insult or not, so i'll just let it go...
but sam, like blue said most people for some reason can't see a plant creature as anything else then humanoid creature. in fact anything is coming back to the form of a human as if that was the most evolved form a monster could have. reguardless of form in a picture. shambling mounds are just basic instincts and he is a plant creature. to me plant creatures aren't humanoids because they are plants and plants do not have humanoid forms.
but you are right, see it the way you want to.
this is also why most people put eyes and mouths to elementals who have no real need for eyes or even mouths because they dont swallow things. yet we draw them for some reasons !

DnDPaladin. What I meant was, when the players are busy fighting a creature, they are probably not going to care if it is suppose to have eyes or not. Since most D&D monsters are fictional or based on myth, their appearance is open to interpretation. That is why there are so many different looks to the same creature in pictures and in miniature sculpts.
P.S. I understand your interpretation of the shambling mound as a plant based creature, but that does not mean it cannot have intelligence, especially in a game of fantasy.
