Vemonfang almost killed us, and it probably could have if my brother didn't have it fly off at about a 3rd if it's HP, we might have killed it to but it would have cost us a party member or 2

I am not sure what the party is going to do. They told me 2 weeks ago before we took our Christmas break that they were going to help the druid by "killing" the Dragon. The druid asked for help driving him off but they immediately took that as kill him. We'll see how it goes. Might have some new characters before the night is through.

Maybe the same thing will happen, if they hurt it enough

Well they never made it. They decided they wanted to clear all of Thundertree tonight. The only thing left is the dragon so they decided to leave it for next week. That gives me a week to plan. I think I am going to build a multi-story tower to play out the whole battle. Should be a good time.

In both 1e and 2e, flying creatures can't fly after losing like 75% of their HP -- they'd have to walk. Just something to file away for planning... The dragon will know this, but the players should not. Happy tactics! Cheers!

In the monster manual it talks about dragons being powerful enough to effect there environment, where their lair is, so terrain to represent those changes could be neet

Not sure yet what I am going to do. I need to plan something out for this encounter as well as plan Cragmaw Castle...if they make it past Thundertree. Also need to plan a level 1 introductory adventure if they DON'T make it past Thundertree

Lair Actions can literally brings players disaster if they aren't high enough level. same with legendary actions. that said, this fight in the book is supposed to be a flight type of situation. where players are level 3 and he is CR 8, which is a 3 times deadly encounters. this encounter is't supposed to be a cake walk. so i say go for broke.
