Hey everyone!
Just a little history of my gaming.. I've been playing Dungeons & Dragons for about 15 years. Originally starting in 2e then converted to 3e and 3.5 several years after it was released. I've played a bit of Pathfinder and toyed around with a handful of other tabletops, but I buried my feet into 3.5e for the most part. I'm strictly the DM for the majority of the time, only actively playing in one campaign with the group I started with. If anyone has look into the old Ruins of Quinstead material, that's my DM from that campaign and he's great at what he does, so check that out if interested. (Sorry for the unintentional plug).
I've taken a bit of time off gaming lately but looking to get back into it and stumbled across this community. I'm excited to learn about all the tricks of the trade and be able to impliment it into my groups.
For the most part I can tell that the majority of the community plays grilles, but I intent to use a grid as well as have the amazing touches of crafting material. I haven't had alot of time to dig into the forum yet, so I'll likely make a post about grid crafting as soon as I get a good feel for the craft.
Anyway, this is just my greeting to the community and I hope to have alot of fun bouncing ideas off of everyone here. See you in the forums!

Welcome!, and yes most of the crafters here do gridless but a lot do (mostly with modular tiles) i personally use grid as well and just did a forest tile that you might like. The grids where drawn into a foam sheet then pressed with a ruler and as i textured i ran a pen through the materiel to maintain the lines. Im preety happy with the result

Wow you are right on the money there! That looks like it will be a great method to use. The first time I ever did anything 3dish was a few years ago when I ran City of Blood out of a dragon magazine I believe. There is a rooftop chase scene that made for a very dramatic visual so the night before the session I had the inspiration to cut up some wood and box up the buildings with gridded out cardboard to act as the rooftops. Absolutely zero detail or painting at all, but the group seemed blown away at the feel of the visual and the dynamic of calculating movement and space when seeing the height difference in buildings, etc. It was reportedly the best session any of them have ever played out of a over a decade of gaming. I can't wait to start breaking the real crafts out now!
Once I learn how to do it all well enough, of course.
Thanks for the welcome!

I mostly do gridless, but it is interesting to see a technique for maintaining a grid while adding ground texture.
Here's a recent post showing a grid in insulation foam subsequently painted for a dungeon floor: dmscraft.proboards.com/thread/4100/last-nights-game

Glad to hear your excited, and a little extra work on some terrain or just small modular pieces can really add to the experience

Welcome. I'm relatively new as well. This board is stupendous. Lots of great constructive comments and people to bounce ideas off of. My number one advice to all new board members? Make sure your purple worm's scales go in the right direction.

l7arkness, love the gridded outdoor tile. I am trying to do something like that in a modular type. Haven't been super happy with the results this far. Yours looks amazing! I was thinking of doing outdoor tiles with trees/hedgeros for the "walls". I'd love to see more of your stuff!
