Hey guys, looking for some quick suggestions. I am making a set of modular foam core tile geomorphs, and was trying to think of worthwhile textures to make for them. So far I have hardwood flooring and flagstone textures, but am looking for a good third option that will do the foam Core justice while being distinct from my other two tiles.
I know it is rather easy to carve into foamcore, but for the life of me I am drawing a blank.
Also, keep in mind this is for fantasy. Metal paneling tiles may be a project for the future, but it isn't in the cards currently.

I dont know how to craft it, but many old, real live castles have cellars with simply hard packed earth. Its a uneven yellowbrown texture, maybe the old rolling a stone (aluminium Foil ball?)over the foamboard. For example, take a look at this picture:

Not really sure if I got the question right, but you could do cobble stones - the round ones like so; To do it in foam core simply draw irregular circles that just touch each other, be sure to use a ball point pen or a dull pencil and really press into the foam to get the best effect. Fair warning tho after doing just one 75x75mm tile my hand was cramping so badly that I've started trying to cast the tiles in plaster instead

I was thinking of doing a sandstone slabs kinda thing, but don't think it would be as impressive or worthwhile.
The cobblestone idea is too close to the flagstone texture I am working on...
Brinks maybe? Seems too bland, unless I did a circular pattern...

They are really not very impressive. I am taking the minimalist approach this time.
Basically just 9 or so cut hexagons with the texture. No pathways...easy stuff. Just attach a tile to any of the sides and you're done.
I messed up the measurements...I was going for a specific ratio and it didn't pan out somehow. Ah well...maybe next time.
But if I can wrangle some pics I will.

The hard packed dirt look might be possible by taking a large fairly rough rock from outside and pressing it into the foamcore.

The hard packed dirt look might be possible by taking a large fairly rough rock from outside and pressing it into the foamcore. yep, this is how I do all my texturing...I have a few different rocks just for this purpose that live happily on me craftin' shelves
sometimes you press, sometimes you press and roll, sometimes you press and twist which causes little tears that can look like cracks, all the while being mindful Not to pattern the texture, its a dead give away unless you want a patterned texture like a herring bone brick pattern for instance, in which case remove the eraser from the top of a wood pencil, shape the metal bit that had the eraser in it like a rectangle then stamp your pattern into the styroboard good to go

Rough stone/dirt, using the aluminum foil ball concept that Wylock uses when making his cave tiles.
Also, you could go with the stone slab idea, make 1/2" to 1" cuts in the foamcore, then widen them with either a scribing tool or a pen. Then cut odd cracks in them. I believe that is different enough from your flagstone idea to look interesting.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I am going to do the packed earth idea, or maybe one large, plain stone slab. Not decided yet...

Ok, pictures: This one is just the hexagons cut out of Foamboard. They (sadly) are not perfectly aligned. Close though... This one is just the texture being carved. I don't rip off all the paper. Adds texture. The hexes sealed and painted, with figures for scale. Set up as an inn/tavern. Yay!

And this project has inspired me to make stupidly easy to make doors too...best and most satisfying door idea I have ever had. I will post pics tomorrow if I get a few prototypes painted.

They came from walmart...so I have a ton still...but out of that pack they were the smaller beads. Hope that helps.

So here is the door construction. Any paper crafter may appreciate it... These are note cards I found to be cut to this particular dimension...think I picked them up at Staples. Pretty handy for some projects. Just fold... ...cut and glue. I then got some extra bits of Foamboard and cut down the center to create a slot for the paper to slide into. So here is a single against a single tile so you can get the general gist of construction. And a 5 room dungeon with doors. You'll notice I used colored pencil on the doors. For prototypes that is all I really wanted to bother with, but overall construction time/cost? 10 minutes for the 4 doors (brainstorming included) and a few pennies. Less than 50 cents for 4 doors, I am sure. Of course I didn't paint the foamcore clip tabs...that may take a hair longer.

Nice, simple design, easy to implement, looks good when completed!

remember, everything can be done with paper. or cards in this case. if i remember correctly most of the things in HeroQuest wer elal cardstock with a base and its the base that had the weight.
