Hi, I'm new. Several months ago DMKev asked me to show what I do, so here we go. I only got into terrain with Dwarven Forge's first 2 kickstarters. However, their 3rd was not to my liking, so I made my own DF compatible city builder stuff, like so: And, And, And, So, what I'm doing to make is stuff is- starting with the floors, I measure the thickness of 2 popsickle sticks and cut some scrap 1/8 inch ply wood to 10x10cm minus the sticks. 10cm is DF compatible. I then trace my grid on the plywood and use the edge of a file to make it a groove, and then draw with a pen the floorboards. Then I glue the sticks to the edges giving it the thickness. Before applying stain, I clamp all floors together and mark for the holes that go in the side. These holes are for linking floors together with small toothpick pegs. This allows me to pick up entire levels. Next are the walls. I cut some 1/8th inch plywood 4x10cm. I split some sticks by hand with a utility blade, which gives the wood a raw and imperfect look, which I like. Then I start gluing sticks on. I cut off the overhang and glue on more. After I put a miter on the edges so the corners fit together, I texture the walls with a dab of latex caulk. I smear it around like icing a cake. Base paint it and drybrush it and the fake stucco look really pops! The final thing that I do is put a couple 2 mm rare earth magnets on the bottom of the walls and in the floors. This really holds everything together. There are many other special walls and floor and other stuff, like stairs and balconies, but that's the basics. I'll post more some other day. I really like some of the ideas that I've seen on these boards and I'm excited to share! You guys rock!

That is some beautiful woodwork. That last shot shows a daunting amount of effort, but the results are truly remarkable. I love the faux stucco effect you've achieved. I can't believe you got the wood beams to look that nice, considering how warped that brand of popsicle stick can be.

To decorate the walls I hang mirrors, mounted heads, shelves, pictures of dogs playing D&D, pictures of disney princesses playing D&D (actually that only comes into play when my daughter is gaming with us), and whatever else mounted with paper clips or wire. I wish I knew of a more invisible option that would do the trick. Any ideas?

Likely it's a Russian Imperial or a Coffee Stout. Thanks, Draklith, I've been suspicious of magnet paint, but I'll try it. I assume it's not magnetic, but rather metallic, otherwise how does the paint determine it's polarity? In the first picture there are gates which I found in the scrapbook section of the craft store. Sometimes I mount stuff like that to clear plexiglass so that whatever is under the piece shows through it, and it can be used in several different settings.

I love magnetic paint and have used it succesfully in a lot of projects. You are right in that it's not really magnetic but rather it contains very fine iron filings so shake well before use and aply at least 3 coats crosswise to one another. If you want an example of how well it works check out my magnetised village here dmscraft.proboards.com/thread/1024/stroezies-magnetised-village

Some of the tiles I made have permanent props attached, except for minis. Such as my bar and dining halls: I don't think terrain should just be eye candy. When I make terrain I'm looking for ways that the PCs can interact with it, so I wanted to make a chandelier tile that suspended the chandelier from a ceiling that doesn't exist. They could swing from it or send it crashing down on the enemy. If anyone can tell me how they would do it differently, I'm all ears. I was hoping the bamboo skewer holding it looked like the rope, but it's quite thicker. First, I had to have strong posts, so they were embedded. Then I made the chandelier out of found objects around my shop. So, a plumbing washer, small metal washers, and some other rings. I made candles from sticking glue in cocktail straws and shoving in some braided yellow thread. Afterwards, my wife told me it would have been easier just to dip the thread in actual wax, but O'well. And one possible tavern layout would be:

Love the chandelier idea. Now to figure out how to make one that can be used in a 2.5D setup...
