So I asked the creator of Mostly Printed CNC if his device would work well as a 3D printer. I am excited by his reply. Here's my inquiry:My 3D printer broke, and I was thinking of building this machine, so I could use it as a 3D printer among other things. I know it's great for wood and metal, but how good is it printing? What layer height is it capable of and how good do the prints look? I am a bit spoiled by .1 layer height of the printer that broke on me (monoprice flashforge/ctc clone). I imagine I'd have quite a build area for the 3d printer.. I could print like 12" x 12" dungeon gaming tile pretty easily I imagine. I am excited about the prospect of this being my primary 3D printer. Please let me know if this is feasible. I'd buy the kit you're selling.. and I guess you sell a $50 extruder for it as well? Here's his reply:Kind of a tricky question. Technically we are running at 2 times the resolution of most printers, 32nd stepping instead of 16th. Practically this doesn't matter at all. Our prints look just like any other printers we all use the same parts. If you have ever seen a bad print it wasn't the printers fault. I have a bunch of printers running, 4 different brands, all the prints look the same. Layer height is determined by nozzle size. The MPCNC can easily handle .1mm, as can any other printer. Yup, have all the parts needed. My sales pitch is this, It's a printer like all the rest, it can just be bigger, and you can mill with it when you need something other than plastic. Oh, and its pretty inexpensive.

That is versatile. I've been working on printing the parts for this (but as usual I get sidetracked) Let me know how this works out.

How much would this cost to get going? I am rather interested in it and the DIY filament extruder. I do not have the capability to make these things but they seems pretty awesome!
Thank you early adopters!

Thank you early adopters! It looks like it'd be under $600, under $450 if you print the parts yourself. Then I'd have a 3D printer with any size build area I want it to be, cnc wood router (using DeWalt DW660 -- extra $60 or so), and I could also put a head on for laser engraving and laser wood cutting.

You could put 4 heads on it to print 4x the speed too

Only thing I am currently worried about is the roughness and straightness of the electrical conduit the printer makes use of as rails.

I can help you there if you need. I have the files and could run a print of a couple pieces to see how they come out. I'm looking to build one myself for the router.

It's about 180 hours of printing. lots of stuff needs printed at say 50% infill to be strong. That's a lot of wear and tear on a printer and so much time. I can see why he is charging $190, even though it's like $30 in filament.

Sorry, completely off topic here, but I figure most with a 3d printer might be reading this, sooooooo......
Can I commission someone to print a 13" diameter gear for me? I would pay for your time of course. Need it to mesh with some other plastic gears I have already. I can send the gear to whichever printmaster feels they can do it, the middle of the gear can be blank, hollow, just need the gear part, kinda a circumference only, like a ring

Sorry, but mine won't print one that big. Wish I could help.

This machine isn't the greatest for 3D printer due to the relatively rougher conduit the bears roll across. I ended up getting the Monoprice Maker Select -- an OpenSource RepRap Prusa I3 design, very tweakable with large community support. dmscraft.proboards.com/post/51867/threadI still do want to make one of these CNC for rood routing and laser wood cutting. But at least now I'll have a printer to print the $25 in parts vs spending $190 for pre-printed.
