Not sure where to put this, but came across this on reddit. For all you 3D printing enthusiasts. imgur.com/a/57Ypa

So, my best friend and fellow gamer has started printing the Hook Horror... The computer says it will take 1h 22min to print and it will use 6 grams of plastic. It will be interesting to see the final product.

Finally we see some 3D printing action! I still prefer crafting stuff to printing it, but there are just too many possibilities to combine both ways to ignore it.

Does he have an estimate on what 6 grams of plastic will cost? I would love to mess with a 3d printer but it needs to be pretty cost effective after the initial investment.

Umm... roughly 12 cents. 1 kg (2.2lbs) of plastic filament is $20 with Amazon prime. 2.2lbs is about 1000 grams. My guess is that the printed figure is hollow.... but for what should be considered a 'large' mini (2" base), 12 cents (plus cost of running machine) is pretty damn good I think! I agree with tauster , I would rather do my own crafting, but if this mini ends up being pretty cool, I may just look into a 3D printer. I feel like it could hold nearly limitless potential.... but my Achilles heel is the computer design side..... However if more awesome people make files accessible, the sky is the limit. EDIT: I just talked to my buddy, and he is using PLA plastic which is more like $35 for 1 kg. So the actually cost is 21 cents for the mini. Still not bad at all. DOUBLE EDIT: Just found PLA pastic for $23.....SOOOOOOOOO... it's back down to 14 cents!

That's what I am thinking. There are many communities out there doing 3D print stuff. With printers and plastic coming down in price.... it does seem like it could be worth while. Then there is all the non-fantasy stuff too: Modern, Sci-fi. Not to mention other applications that aren't RPG.

My local library has a 3D printer. They have you take an instruction class and then you can use it, and pay for the materials. I'm taking the instruction class next Saturday. After that I might have some things to post here.
My current intention is to print out some miniatures and/or terrain, depending on how much I can use it, and how well it prints. If it ends up printing too grainy for good looking results, I'll just print out armatures and use epoxy putty to finish them up with details.

There is a 3d printer design on instructibles.com that says it can be built for under $150.
Issue is the resolution on a 3d printer (same with a normal printer). That, along with the type of plastic it uses are two things to watch out for when buying or making one.

For all those looking into purchasing i suggest Simple Metal it is a beautiful printer and its cost/power is awesome. I was in the process of purchasing when my wife found a car so going back to saving should have it in a month or so

3D printed stuff, you say? It starts at the bottom of page one there. Ignore the off topic discussion, I guess. You'll get to the Devon Jones sewers (or what I've finished of them, at least) by page three. So... Yes. It can be "3D printed" and still hand made. It doesn't require a major investment. Autodesk's 123D Make is free. All you need is time and... files, I guess. At some point, you'll be making your own files as well but still... The computer does the hard work. You just have to cut, glue, and stack some paper. Maybe you do learn a 3D modeling program while you're at it... but it never hurts to be learn'ed. The whole process can be pretty enlightening at times. You really learn a lot about the structure of things when you build them up by a hundredth of an inch at a time. No joke. forget it rousseau, nobody in their right mind will have the patience you do with your awesome 3D stuff ! XD

Rouseau your method is great, but I was fotunate enough to get a decent printer myself and I love it. I will say that some of the fine details get lost on 3D printers and small items.
