how to paint any miniThese videos I found are specifically for minis but the woman goes over the basics (lighting, coloring, contrast, ect) which can be used on any project. I know when I first started doing tiles I had heard of dry brushing but had no clue exactly what it was. It's sort of assumed by most of us (after a time) that everyone knows specifics of painting. I was just looking on tips for painting minis, but watching these I have seen she gets into stuff which can be applied to all our projects, not just minis. Thought I would share them with you guys. It might be too basic for some folks but it's just what the doctor ordered for people who either need a refresher or folks starting out on their crafting journey. and on a side note I found a good idea for sealing minis. Use two coats of a high gloss polish. Then use two or three coats of a matte finish (say the Krylon stuff). When the sealer gets rubbed off due to handling you get a shine (the paint is still protected from getting rubbed away from handling).... When you see shiny parts you know to reseal your mini.... IOW you know it needs to be resealed instead of repainted also gonna cut and paste this to FB

Getting back to basics is always a good idea. Thanks for posting this. There are many approaches to painting (block painting + The Dip, for example; video example), but it is nice to get links to get folks started. Cheers! PS: The Dip works superbly for terrain pieces, as well as mini's. It is extremely fast, easy, and effective, for dark/brown types of terrain such as rocks, caverns, etc...

And that's just it.... what works for you might not work for me, and what works for me might not work well for the next person. I always like to get a few different takes on how people do things. I was trying to come up with some sort of metaphor about needing to be versed in the basics. I know when I got into making tiles I didn't know what dry brushing was. Which explains why my minis from back in the 80's looked like a child them with water colors. Also got floored by the gloss undercoat sealing stuff. Someone on facebook made the same "mistake" I did when first reading the guy's technique. WTF? gloss, no one wants a gloss coat?!?!?! He got it, just like I did, after a bit.... If it's a display piece you don't need the gloss. But handling will wear off the matte sealer, and it's a lot easier to look for shiny parts and respray with the matte than it is to strip down the mini and have to do a total repaint. I love the simple tips like that. LOL also came up with a way to make sure I start to sculpt minis soon.... I know I need a lot of practice (starting just about from scratch). My g/f's 8 year old granddaughter, asked her if she was too old or just right for the 3 little pigs. So going to try to make mini sculpts of them and houses (using gaming crafting) for their houses. Get the motivation going, what sort of horrible human being would break a promise to a child? Assimilation has begun

Thanks for this. I am just going to start mini painting. I got into the bones kickstarter and they will be here this year. Can't wait to start painting. No thanks needed. I know I needed a refresher after 20+ years and the attempts I have made this past year have sucked (lacking the basic knowledge). I know the skill level here on the forums range from newbe to being able to build something killer from chewing gum, baling wire, and used kitty litter.... So sort of figured that if it helped me a bit there would be other that it would help a bit. She just explains some of the basics in that series, and then has some vids of painting specific War Hammer stuff. I liked it because of explaining the fundamentals and then seeing them applied. Must get more coffee in me so I can start the ones I primed last night

Thanks for posting this link. I haven't painted any minis since the late 80's. But I found a boxful of unpainted Ral Partha minis when I was clearing out my mother's garage this year - no idea how they ended up at her house. So I will be painting about 50-plus miscellaneous minis for my grandkids to use now that they are starting to play D&D 5th edition.
Going to have to learn to paint with acrylics!
