Fellow crafters, DMScotty, myself (TheDMG) and AJ have briefly discussed the loose idea of having a "CraftCon" in 2016. Due to the fact that many of you live all over the world, but a significant percentage live in the US and spread out all over the US this poses a bit of a problem. We are a small niche community, but friendships and collaboration are strong. There have been a few real world meet ups by individuals (which is great), but something more formal may be desired. That's what this post is about. How do we create a CraftCon that people can attend / be apart of and be as inclusive as possible? The idea is that DmScotty, myself and possibly AJ and even others tour the US for 1 month and end at GenCon in 2016 for a final meetup. Now bare with me, as this is still an idea and not a going concern at this point. We would travel to major points around the US for 1 month and possibly also the UK (for a week as it is much smaller). The "major points" would be areas where there are the greatest concentration of crafters and enthusiasts. So basically a whole bunch of mini cons leading up to GenCon 2016. A documentary would be shot of the entire thing and released online. Now we (DMScotty, TheDMG and AJ) do not have the funds to do this, so the idea is to create a KickStarter campaign to raise the money to do the tour, film the documentary and whatever else. At this point we have not even looked into costs involved, locations, timing, etc. What we would really like to know from the community are the following: - Is this a viable idea?
- What would you expect to see in the KickStarter campaign?
- Where is the closest major center to you (say no more than 3 hour drive) with an airport?
All comments are welcome.
Thanks DMG

I'll start.
1) I think it's a great idea. I'd love to be involved. 2) I think a good starting point for a KickStarer reward would be a DVD of the documentary. From there you could have limited higher rewards like dinner with you guys, or even be in a game. 3) I live about an hour from Chicago, which has at least two major airports.

1) i think the idea is absolutely awesome 2) I don't really know an answer to the kickstarter thing 3) i live in the middle of Switzerland, so every airport here is pretty close to where I live (Zürich, Basel, Geneva). But well, I don't really have much hope that if anything like CraftCon ever happens, that it will be held anywhere close to my home.

I would love to see this!
1) totally viable idea depending on your schedules meshing for it. 2)I would say Portland, OR is the closest major airport...only about 15 minutes from me 3) kickstarter? DVD like stated earlier, dinner and a game would be cool....maybe being able to go home with pics with the gurus and a chance of a handmade memento?

1) This is nothing short of a brilliant idea! I would definitely like to involved and would be willing to help in any way I can.
2) Kickstarter is also a fantastic idea. Pledge goals/rewards could include: a copy of the dvd, a signed copy of the dvd (Scotty, dmg, AJ), A 'thank you' in the credits, a specific question answered on the dvd, dinner with the 'three', a personalized craft.....and that's just off the top of my head.
3) Chicago or Detroit are the closest major hubs for me, but I would be willing to travel farther.

Good Morning fellow crafters! I'll second the motion. I love the idea but maybe start small and see how it goes. I'm about an hour from Seattle and we have a few airports to choose from including international HUB SeaTac airport! I know the guys would receive a big welcome in this community. Maybe mix it up with some D&D/ RPG style gameplay featuring 2.5 NEXT. Work with local talent and game stores. Let me know and I'll get a list together for you. I'll even contact them and get there interest level.

I definitely think that KickStarter would be a great venue for getting this going. And I will echo the sentiments about offering copies of the DVD, and such. The dinner and a game thing is an awesome idea, but then you would also be possibly isolating people in remote locations who want to donate a larger amount - as it would be unlikely that you could feasibly come to them on your Tour de Craft. Perhaps dinner and gamage should just be a part of the Tour, period... for whomever is able to make it to where it is happening. That is, after all, kind of the point, yeah?
But I think that things like specific mention on future videos, listing in the credits of the DVD, personally crafted items, etc. are all great ideas for offerings for those that can donate to the KickStarter campaign.
As for where in the world I am at... Houston, Texas is the closest big city.

I think the nearest major airport would be Logan in Boston.

I think it might be. I have no idea. It really depends on who is involved and how about you are going to pull this off. I am north about 100 miles from Yosemite and about 100 miles east of from Oakland CA. Everything takes a long time to get to. I don't really live near anything other than gold mines and trees.

I think its a very cool idea...I'd help support it, but you guys have to ride the "short" bus
for the kickstarter...I want AJ's lab coat, the one he wears at work, and I want the DMG's cat lol
20 min outside of Wash DC, 20 min from Dulles airport, Virginia

Everyday. I live in Friendswood! I'm in Lubbock!! I want TheDMGs cats autograph!!! @eramas Nice Friendswood, That's next door! You ever go to Gerard's or Empire Central? My group used to go to Gerard's but parking and traffic is getting too much for the group. We started going to Empire Central Wednesday Nights so if you're ever free, let's meet up. Rook, I was stationed at San Angelo for a while at Goodfellow Air Force Base. Closest I ever got to Lubbock. It's be one hell of a road trip for us all to meetup (9+ hrs by car). Hey look CraftersCon! That's 2 people in the South Houston Area. Do you plan on conning at a game store or alternative venue (like convention center)?
