I was at Goodwill last week and fount a bag with a bunch of little dinosaurs and a few horses. JACKPOT! So, here's the horses... I cut off their manes and tails. I used Scotty's hot-glue-on-plastic fire technique to fashion new manes and tails. Two layers on each side seemed like enough. Next, I painted one horse black, and the other white. I also cut out the manes and tails. Gluing the manes on was tricky. The horses necks are curved, so I found it easier to glue the top on, let that dry, then glue the bottom, so I could hold it in place while it dried. I also had to trim the manes a bit, too. Use some hot glue to blend them in. It's hard to see, but I also put some glue on their legs, just above their hooves. I used Scotty's fire technique for the manes, tails, and the fire on the legs. Yellow and red for the nightmare, light and dark metallic blue for the redeemed nightmare. I gave their bodies each a coat of paint, too. Flat black for the Nightmare, pearl white for the other. Don't forget the eyes! Here's one with some minis. They're kinda big, so it's a Cauchemar! I still need to get bases for them. Any suggestions for a Huge (3*3) base? I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, but as always, they could be better. Any suggestions and criticisms are welcome. Thanks!

Wow they turned out awesome! Great work! It's a very cool idea to modify those horses. I especially like the paint job you did.

Thanks, Alexis!
I'm going to keep my eyes open for horses that are a little closer to scale. I'll be modding some of them, if I find any.

definitely worth the like and exalt.
that is serious work there. one way to make sure that the manes fits. is to take the horse and put it down on the plastic then use a sharpie to mark the line off the horse. that way it shows you about where the curves will be and then you apply hot glue. thats what i was doing for the curves on my ships that i made.

I use peel-n-stick, vinyl floor tiles ($0.39-$0.69 per 12"-square tile), for bases. I glue two tiles to each other using their own glue. I then measure, and cut to sizes needed. I Hot Glue the figures to the bases, then I paint the bases with PVA Glue, dip in colored sand mixtures, let dry, then paint with watered-PVA Glue, to seal it. Cheers!

The Hot Glue is actually stronger than I expected it would be. I can, if necessary, peel it off of the the base, and the figure's feet, but the vinyl tile base usually is damaged in the process. For covering the base, I use full-strength PVA Glue to bond the initial application of sand on the base, and this is followed with a Scenic Cement application (or, 50% PVA Glue + 50% Water mixture), to seal everything in place. The two layers of tile usually will not warp, but if I use something other than PVA Glue/Scenic Cement to texture the base, it will. By the way, single layers of vinyl floor tile will warp quite easily, even with PVA Glue/Scenic Cement. Single layers are also somewhat flimsy, and the glue side will not hold much of anything, by itself -- except for another glue-side layer of tile. The vinyl floor tiles are quite useful. Here is a link to my blog page demonstrating how I use them in crafting, if interested. Cheers!

sgtslag: I'll try the vinyl tiles sometime. I had to use the nightmare this weekend, so I just used a wooden disk that I found.
I got a package of closer-to-scale horses, so I'll be making a regular-sized nightmare soon. Any suggestions for other horse-type creatures? I'll probably make a unicorn. Maybe save one until I find a reasonably-sized bird to make a hippogriff!

Really nice looking 'horses'. I too wondered why you cut off the manes and tails. Great work.
