I've never painted minis before but always wanted to try it. I got my chance when we bought the WoA board game a few weeks ago. When I learned how easy it is to remove paint from minis using Simple Green, I figured I had nothing to lose.
I tried a few brands of craft paint, and I like Delta Ceramcoat the best. It has more pigment as is a lot smoother than the other brands I tried. For metallics I used Martha Stuart brand because they have a lot of different colors, with some really good colors for metal besides standard silver and gold. I also got a set of Liquitex inks in burnt umber, raw sienna, and raw umber, and they are really nice washes. They weren't too expensive with a 40% off coupon at Michaels. Brushes were a cheap set of golden taklon brushes and one "professional" size 2 round, which was worth the $8 it cost. The set came with a size 4 filbert that works really well for dry brushing.
Base coat is white gesso because I already have it and I didn't want to deal with spray paint. I went with white because I wanted brighter colors, so I had to do two coats of darker colors. I think it worked well. I put on a light coat of gesso, making sure I got into all the little crevices but also making sure I didn't obscure details. I found that it doesn't shrink like a lot of people say. I used Liquitex like most people recommend, so I'm not sure why it didn't shrink for me. They don't look as good as a lot of minis I've seen done with the miniature paints, but I'm happy with the results.
Most of these pictures are not close-ups because I just used my phone camera. I'll take better pics after we move in a couple of weeks and I have my tripod from storage.
Here are the big guys and two heroes:
Ashardalon:
Some orcs:
Most of the smaller monsters:
And the storage I set up for the minis and game pieces. It's a Snapware container that's made for storing ribbon, with an added shallow Snapware component from another set:
And of course my trusty assistant had to get in the picture.
