I'm building a barrack that I need to stock with bunk beds. I only have single beds so it's time to create some bunks. The beds are make from craft sticks, match sticks, and the large fireplace match sticks. I started by making the bed surfaces. To help facilitate the gluing of edge-to-edge craft sticks, I like to use masking tape. The tape holds everything in place but you can still bend the sticks at the edges to add glue. I stacked them up, face-to-face (with a piece of parchment paper between them) and back-to-back. Then threw on some spring clamps. While the bed surfaces are drying I cut the fireplace match sticks to length (about 1 3/4") Peal the masking tape off the bed surfaces. I trimmed the bed surfaces to about 1" by 2" (although that my be a little large) I glued match sticks around the edges of the bed surfaces, in the same manner that DMG uses to make tables. The headboard and footboard are more craft sticks. I also added some wood texture. Then I glued on the posts. Obviously, it still needs to be painted. I think I would also like to add some mattresses and definately some ones that are moldering.

Great Tutorial! Really like the use of masking tape & parchment paper to make the job easier.
Need to get me one of those v-gouges.

Yeah, the wood texture you achieve with that tool is excellent. The mouse trap blew my mind, looked like a cast, commercial piece. Really like the bunks, too.

These look great, and I agree: I need that gouge. It looks incredible. Great work!

Very nice looking! I'd like to see them painted up (and I wonder if they'd take stain well).

i really need to make some beds as well. always found it funny though, how is one without strenght gonna get up there ? Help from others. I've had to do that a lot for shorter people in the Navy. What tool is used for making the wood look like that? I see it's a guage, but I don't know what kind or what it looks like.

Thanks everyone for the compliments! I will definitely get a painted one up soon. I'm trying to build several at once so I only have to do one round of painting.

Painted. I tried some different browns than I normally use... I'm not sure if I like it or not. I also made some moldering straw mattresses.
