I am filled with jealousy. Absolutely filled to the brim. That is the most coolest-est gaming table ever. I love the choice to make it into two tables. Was the design inspired by a casino table, or did it evolve straight out of your wish list?

Thanks everyone! It really is the workhorse of my D&D collection. For being little more than plywood and paint, it have given our group over 12 years of comfortable and efficient gaming. It has survived spilled drinks, metal dice, two floods, a host of excited players, disassembling and reassembling no less than 40 times, and moving across the country...twice.

Was the design inspired by a casino table, or did it evolve straight out of your wish list? Thank you! That means a lot to me. It has been so long that I don't really remember how we came up with it. Likely, we were at the bar sketching drawings on cocktail napkins. We had maybe four or five design ideas that slowly evolved into the finished table. We had to built the table in two sections because we were limited by readily available lumber (4x8 sheets) and the turn radius of the basement stairs where the table would ultimately live.

Time to resurrect this thread since I am ready to build a table. I love this design and I think I am going to be stealing this from you. Given the size of this I am considering building a raised tier about 12 inches in from the edges. I would probably only raise it about 6 inches and would allow for a small shelf under the raised tier for each player to store a couple books. Since you have been using this table for so long, have you found yourself wanting for anything else?

Wow I love this table. It's amazing all the storage space. Could run a really nice game with this.

I was curious where you stored all your tavern, general store, torture chamber & misc pieces. Now I know Very handy, all those shallow drawers.

Thanks, Meph. The table is roughly 6' by 7'. It is 30" from floor to tabletop and has a 5.25" apron. It has ten 4x4 post legs. The table is largely constructed from plywood and 1-by lumber. At the time of construction I was limited by the space of the room it would be in (the room was only 9' wide), the route I had to take to get the table in the basement (a small 90 degree turn at the landing of the stairs) and the space and tools I had to actually build it (small garage workshop with mostly hand power tools).
This table is all function and no form. It is a fully utilitarian workhorse. No more, no less. It has seen over 15 years of solid game play and still functions the same as it did on that first day.
"Do I still use it?"
Yes. We still game on it every time we play. I can say, without ego, this is the most comfortable and intuitive gaming table I have ever played on or run a game on. There is tons of storage space. Players each have a drawer to pull out or put away character sheets, dice, pencils, minis, notepads, or books at a moment's notice. Each player has a space with elbow room. The DM sits in a niche that puts him/her at the center of the action, plus gives them two wings to store supplies. Every person at the table can reach the center of the table without standing up. I just makes gaming easier.
"Would I change anything going forward?"
Yes. I have thought long and hard over the years about what I would change if I ever built another table. I would keep the overall shape the same (horseshoe). For a long time, I thought about building a table with a dry-erase top with a 1-inch grid on it. That way I could just plunk down minis and draw dungeons or wilderness landscapes around them. I also gave some thought to putting a rear projection screen on the table and placing a projector under the table for digital dungeons and landscapes (no overhead shadows to worry about). But, neither of these ideas does much for me anymore. I create dungeons out of cardboard or use dungeon tiles. I would have little need to draw or project anything anymore.
So, this is what my plan is now: I am no longer restricted by space, route, or tools. I would build the table with the same overall horseshoe shape. I would build the table 1 foot longer and 1 foot wider (7'x8') I would construct the tabletop as one piece and eliminate 2 legs. I would add a center drawer in the niche for the dm, plus two small triangular draws in the angles sections of the niche. But mostly I would change the materials of the table. I would press wood veneer on a mdf substrate. For me, I would go with a cherry top with a black band around the edge followed by a walnut edge (either a bullnose or a knife edge). The apron will be cherry with walnut legs and drawer fronts. I will also add power outlets to the legs for charging/running stuff like PCs or soundboards.
...That's where my head is now...

That is a work of art. I built a table a while ago, but it's not of a wargame table. It's 4'X8'. Seems big right? Well, big doesn't always beat function as your beautiful table has just displayed. One day, when I have more money than sense, I'll build/buy a more functional one. Till then, love yours. Very cool and very inspiring. Especially the storage space.

Well curufin , your table is a hit. I downloaded your pics as well as pics of about 15 other tables, most of them including LCD screens. At last night's game I decided to display my full sized map on the TV on the wall and have the players draw out individual rooms when they went into combat. That worked out well for us. So I showed them all of the tables and I saved yours for last. I figured they would all go for the LCD tables but when I got to yours it was overwhelmingly agreed, they liked your design best. So, that is what I am making. Once I get around to it I will post a build thread. Might wait until I am on vacation in the end of next month.....or I might start it this week. Who knows
