I posted something like this last week on the Facebook page. I decided to make a few more books, so here it is. This is a super simple and fast way to stock up that library. I started with a some different colored strips of construction paper and some craft sticks. Closed books: Fold each strip around a craft stick and glue it in place. I used Aleene's tacky glue, but PVA glue will work too. Using some extra craft sticks and some spring clamps, I set them aside for about 10 min to dry. Remove the clamps. This stack will yield about 100 books. Cut into book sized pieces. Along side the pile of books I made last week. I used a fine point permanent marker to add interest to some of the book bindings. Very quick and very effective. For open books: Start with a couple pieces of colored construction paper, some printer paper and some craft sticks. Instead of gluing the two pieces of printer paper together as I did here, just take one larger piece and fold it in half. Glue down one craft stick to the construction paper. Make sure to add a little glue to the side edge. Prepare the second craft stick with glue on one face and one edge. Place the folded printer paper fold down next to the first craft stick and sandwich it with the second craft stick. Clamps may help with the glueing. Roughly trim up the paper. Cut to size. 12 open books. You could use a fine point marker to add some text and/or wipe some tea or coffee on the pages to yellow them up. Cheers!

Brilliant! I can't even believe how much time you just saved me. I'm off to make a library of my own!

These look amazing! Thank you for the tip. I also think those clamps are mysteriously cute.

I also think those clamps are mysteriously cute. I do woodworking and you can never have too many clamps. These came is a value pack that I got from Home Depot for about $8. I think there were about 15 clamps that came in the value pack (1 extra large, 2 large, 4 medium, 6 small, and 2 tiny clamps). I bought a couple of packs over the years, mainly for the larger clamps...which left me with dozens of small clamps that are the perfect size for crafting!

Nice! I was looking for a quicker way to fill up my bookshelves that I made and here it is! Not that DMG's way is not good, it just seems slower (did it for my first 4 bookshelves but I need more).
Thanks a lot!
Btw, I love the different sizes of the books. This makes everything that much realistic.

Less qork for me lol What you do is you bring them to an open meadow, where they see a strange sight: an old wizened man sitting at a desk amid piles of books and book shelves. Then you introduce him as a seemingly kindly, but utterly insane wizard who believes that he is inside a remote study. He goes a bit beserk when the players don't use the door...

I am so going to have to work that into my campaign!

I probably should have mentioned in the beginning that I not only cut the book heights to different sizes, I also cut the book widths to different sizes as well. That way the book bindings don't line up either.

I had almost overlooked that thread... I never made books so far, because I don't immediately need them in my games and it took too much time. Your method eliminates the latter hurdle, and the 'insane sage on the meadow' takes care of the former hurdle. Damn you, now I have another point on my to-do list! As if it wasn't already overflowing! *groans*

What an incredibly fast way to get the job done. I hated putting books together. Next time I have to this will help out a lot. Thanks.

great way to do closed books... unfortunately this technique doesn'T work well for open book. of course we dont need that many open books though.

Open book tutorial now added to the top of the page. 12 books in the time it takes to drink a cup and a half of coffee.

I specifically avoided filling out my bookcases because books would be a pain to make and paint. No longer will I have to pretend that I did it so they would be "general purpose"!
