On the advice of thedmg I have been using sponges to stamp the floors of my dungeon tiles. Now I'm switching to Hulks and Horrors, so I'll need to make (some) space ship tiles. I envision them having deck plating, made of metal. I had some dense foam in my garage (packing from a PC laptop battery) and I took the Dremel to it. I just made some diagonal lines. Doesn't need to be terribly perfect. I realized that the foam will need to be washed (to get the paint out of it -- if I want to reuse it, which I do) so I backed it by smearing hot glue on it. This worked out very well. I cut it into two pieces for ease of use. Here it is stamped silver on black. Not terrible. Not exactly what I'm looking for, but its a start. I may go look for smooth sponges at the dollar store and see if I can make a pattern that I really like.

Cool stuff. I find myself thinking about Sci-Fi tiles and how I would do them. I think you might be on to something. What about using the thicker craft foam and gluing it to a piece of wood. I think you would be able to cut out more distinct shapes that wouldn't distort. Of course, you would have to clean them. hmmmmmm......

If I glued that to a 2x4 piece or similar, it should cut nicely...

I find that it takes me a couple of tries before I'm satisfied with the final result!
