In the upcoming conclusion of the current campaign, the PCs have been trailing an NPC party of wizards known as the "Legion of Boom." (The former DM is a Seahawks fan.)
There will be a battle royale with this group and I wanted a little something to set them apart. I originally wanted to make a "troll palanquin" but my trolls don't really have the right posture. As I was digging through my box of minis, I realized that these little devils are PERFECT! I mean, look at their arms!
I grabbed two bamboo skewers and determined they would work GREAT!
I wanted the palanquin to be rounded on each side. Square is too boxy and looks cheap. I traced a lid I had handy and just eyeballed the size. (I tend to just eyeball the measurements as I make this sort of thing; I also embrace serendipity (happy accidents) as you'll see)
Quick test -- looks good.
The cardboard I was using happened to have a long narrow strip, pre-punched, so I tore it off and decided to use it for the edge of the palanquin. (happy accident)
The red lid I traced with was slightly lower than the cardboard edging. I used it to hold the base up and I hot glued the edging around the bottom (happy accident)
It's on there quite well without special reinforcement.
I need to mount some "legs" on the palanquin so that it will stand on its own. The girallon will be able to set it down if the wizards so command... I dug through my bits box and I found these plastic "fangs" from Halloween. Must buy more....
They have pre-drilled holes, so I hot glued some wooden sticks in the holes, then I built up the base with some scrap cardboard and a wooden stirrer.
Here it is standing.
Getting the skewers to be well spaced AND spaced correctly for the girallon arms was a pain. Trial and error and plenty of hot glue. I ended up doing it upside-down, not like you see here. I didn't take a picture.
Here it is glued together.
I wanted some more visual elements, so I glued on a skull on a pole, a skull face on the front and some wooden bits to simulate panels on the side of the palanquin. I envision this as a metal/magical device. I also realized that the thin cardboard base didn't have any "weight," so I added some cardboard disks over the thresholds and a folded bit of cardboard against the undercarriage.
Here it is before painting.
Here it is. I painted it black and then drybrushed with silver. I added some green to the bottom (this thing has been slogging through dungeons...) and I painted the bone parts yellow.
The eyes in the front glow red -- what does that indicate?
There's room for a group of wizards. One can even summon reinforcements in the back.
The girallon can set it down and leap to attack, while the wizards back them up with spells!
