I like minis. I love tiles. I love all the little 3D bits/furniture/pillars/etc. that you can use on the tiles. I'm also a BIG improviser at the table. As such, geometric solids (in other words, blocks) play a big role for me. I like to have some handy. Well, up until now, they've just been plain wood. I guess I've been lazy. But that changes today! I spraypainted a bunch of my blocks black. The really big blocks are alphabet toy blocks. You might be able to see some of the cutesy images under the paint. I got them cheap at Goodwill. I made a "paint palette" with just a thin layer of white and black. I got some sponges ready. I really only needed the large one. Here's what they look like after about (seriously) 2 minutes of stamping. You stamp around the sides first; set the block down and stamp the top. I only have to go back and do the bottoms. Then, I'll have to decide if I want to do cracks and lines ala thedmg. I'll set something up for scale when they are totally done. Enjoy!

I call this sort of thing "tactical terrain". You can create interesting combat dynamics with assorted objects that give the players a very intuitive battlefield experience. I also use columns, furniture and steps to avoid all of my battles being done in flat, empty rooms, and to encourage different tactics by the party.
Very nicely done btw. Solid technique well executed.

Nice!
They could be useful for Tomb-Raider-style, block-pushing puzzles, too.

Also, I noticed that you staggered your base cardboard 90 degrees. Does that eliminate the buckling, or just reduce it?
I have a terrible time with buckling.

Also, I noticed that you staggered your base cardboard 90 degrees. Does that eliminate the buckling, or just reduce it? I have a terrible time with buckling. The cardboard I used is double layer. I didn't do anything special to it. It appears that the manufacturer did the 90° turn. I find if I use double-layer cardboard, the buckling is very minimal. Have you tried double layer?

I tried the double layer stuff and found in very hard to but, haven't tried gluing two single layers together yet. I can get an infinite supply of single layer corrugated from the cafeteria where I teach, so there will be glue and paint flying Monday night in my basement. Thanks so much!
