If you want some quick and easy candles that aren't on something, just get some insulated wire that looks the right diameter to you for the candles, cut to the length of the candle and then use a pin to push the wire slightly inside to extend it or just use wire strippers to remove a tiny bit off the top.
Then glue it in place and paint it up...
