Because of leftovers from a project, I now have a piece of plexiglass that is 4'x3' and 1/4" thick. Its GOT to have a use but darned if I can think of one. Help me out guys. I play D&D, no scifi stuff, so keep that in mind.

You can use it as overlay over a printed or otherwise pre-made battlemap, then use non-permanent markers on the plexiglass.

Ice - flying stands - overlay for water encounter - make elementals - invisible character proxies / marker - dry erase tokens or status markers.

If you use watered-down colors to paint it, you can put an (flickering/color-changing) LED behind it and get fire / magic effects.

You could try a "Leap of Faith" - type of encounter. Build a scene that features an "impassable" gorge, cliff, bottomless ravine, etc. You could incorporate a riddle or other clue that might lead your players to step off the edge without any attempt to rescue themselves (no ropes, no tossing stones or tapping a stick out ahead of them). If they do, stop them before they place their mini, and place a section of plexi over the gap, allowing them to move freely. If they do try to play it safe... well... I hope that they did a good job of it, cuz it's a long way down...

I never seem to have enough stands for the swarm of wyverns and / or gargoyles like I want to. (You'd think my players would hate me by now...)

Lots of good ideas! I have so much of it I could do all of em. I especially like the ice, flying stands and spell effects. Never considered those. In all of my days playing D&D I have not once had a water encounter, weird huh?
The leap of faith idea is awesome but I try to stay away from one-shot builds. The way I figure, if Im spending all that time on a piece, I would like to use it again. This is where trading pieces with each other would be really cool. I would build one-shots if some of yall lived closer to me. Great stuff yall, thanks!

Try some dry-erase markers on a scrap piece -- I think it will be permanent on plexi-glass... Overhead markers, water-based, require water/cleaner to remove, are the safest. Cheers!

I use plexiglas (or other acrylic sheets from other brands) for several things;
1. I have a plexiglas screen on my table with a mirror underneath as a digital game map. 2. I place plexiglas over grids or maps so I can use dry erase or wet erase markers to draw on them. 3. I use them as crafting backdrops for painting, molding, cutting etc. 4. I have a piece cut to fit over a teak/mohagany chess table so the wood won't get scratched.

A leap of Faith build wouldn't have to be a one-shot. Careful planning and you could use DMG's "inserts" to convert it from a gap to get across, to a gorge that your players need to travel through (nice place for an ambush), or even a river to cross, wade, or raft. You could add a modular bridge that may or may not fail... lots of possibilities here.
