Sadly, I'm currently unemployed, so I can't justify buying supplies right now to try this, but I had another idea I wanted to share..
Get overhead transparency sheets. Cut them to fit into your tiles, so they cover the floors, but not the walls.
Presto! You can still see your beautiful paint job, but can also write on the floor with dry erase! (Careful of the walls though!)
During the game you could draw bodies, spell effects, fire or whatever else you'd usually draw on a gridded mat.
If you're a computer artist, you could even get inkjet transparencies and print things on them prior to cutting... This could work for adding a grid, or adventure-specific items.
Since the inkjet side of the transparency doesn't play well with dry erase, simply add another transparent layer you can draw on.
Thoughts?

Some time back I was thinking of something similar but with thicker plastic. I had considered getting something custom made from Litko. Your idea is so much more economical. I might try that for some traps in my D&D Adventure systems board games.
