So...in yet another attempt to make use of my construction supplies for tabletop....I had an idea...if it works I will post pics tomorrow or Monday.
I used a quickcrete sand topping mix to patch the stairs leading out to my driveway this summer. As with any concrete work, I had a bunch left over. I filled a culture vial (I work for a scientific supplies company) with some to use as flocking. I've used it before, in the standard glue-dry-shake off-paint method.....but hell, its concrete....theres another wah this could work...
I piled up some hot glue on card stock bases, put in plastic foliage (60% off the small stuff @ Michaels this weekend, BTW...). Before the hot glue dried I flocked it...put some white glue over that and flocked it again.
Here's the crazy idea....I made a thick burnt umber, black paint and water mix...then dribbled that into the piles of flocking by squeezing drips of it from a foam brush between my fingers. Added more burnt umber to the mix to make it as thick as possible, then used that with a wide brush to sculpt the sand mix into piles flat enough to have a mini stand on them.
<rolls d20>…
I'll know if it worked when the mix has time to dry.

<d20 tumblea across table> <result=11>
It couldn't be classified as a crit fail.... but it didn't work as intended...
Downside...the wattery mix just flattens out, making a surface that's level with the rest of the terrain. Sculpting mounds into wet concrete was useless.
Middle side....it still looks flocked.
Upside....it dries out a different color than the base I had attempted it on. More grey in it than the painted flock. Also..it skips the multi-srages waiting process of glue-flock-wait-paint.
Still....the flocking, wait to dry and then paint mix looks more coarse and more like actual earth.
If I get to my PC and tonight I will upload pics...if notim moving on to dry brushing and moss.

so, the wide one in the center is the one i tried the wet concrete with. although the color is better, it didnt work as intended. Also, as the day yesterday passed, it warped the cardstock underneath. Meh.
