So many times, I see a miniature that has been created by one of my clever, talented fellow crafters and the whole design and build is let down by flat, unrealistic, painted eyes. Well, the good news is that making eyes that impress is actually really easy. Lets imagine you have your eye in front of you, its basically the curved space you are going to paint an iris and pupil of some kind on.. now what?
1. Paint it white (not stark white, but a little off white, a cream tone is fine), then let it dry. 2. Cover it with a clear varnish layer, or some clear resin of some kind, let it set/dry. 3. Paint your Iris and Pupil on there. Iris first, if it is not great, wipe it off and do it again, the varnish layer makes this easier by far, then add your pupil and a tiny white point just at one edge (optional, by I like the style), let it dry. 4. Finally, the all important step.. take a drip of clear varnish or resin and create a bead over the Iris.. because real eyes have a curved lense over them, and this one final step will go "POW.. EYEBALL!" and you will nod and grin and say "Thanks AJ, that looks awesome".
Give it a go, post some results. Find something you created previously and revamp the eyes on it, see what it looks like.
