Today was one of those glorious 'let's end these projetcs!' days. Instead of starting yet another new thing, I took a few things that clutter up my craft desk and continued with them. First, a Gormiti earth elemental. I started this more than a year ago, in September 2014 (see here and here). I gave it a black basecoat that is drying at the moment. I can't wait painting the crystals (which have been whittled from hotglue sticks). Then, the wood wool insulation maché which I made into giant tree roots to see how their texture turns out. It took ages to harden, and the result is, well... it's OK but nothing to write home about. You can get this with regular TP maché relatively similar. ...and yes: I did a terrible paint job ont these... Next were the flying stingers made from leaves and hotglue. I simply gave them a coating of Warplock Bronze. It looks great, but it's still wet, so lets see what happens when it has dried. The other long-term procrastinating project I finally continued was painting the giant flowers made from poppy. Like the earth elemental, they have been gathering dust for more than a year on my desk (actually it's already the second time I tried to finish this one...). You have probably seen them in dozens of pics, unfinished and waiting... No more! The white stuff is something I got cheap on ebay: Space Gel from Schminke, which is supposed to be a shimmering, holographic effect like this: It hasn't dried, so I'm on the edge of my seat to see how it turns out!

If you still have some of the wood wool, it looks like you could make hay stacks and similar with little effort there, shape it around a core (For the stacks, buy the styrofoam balls and chop them in half, attach them to a board, coat in white glue and heap tightly over it...spray with varnish.

Haystacks are a good idea. I'll ikeep that in mind! My boy's scissors broke irreparably (cheap plastic), but that doesn't mean we throw it away, right? The green handles look like eyes...

Made another half-dozen of these flyers.... Costs next to nothing (hotglue is probably the most expensive thing) and took me about 15-20 min. I love these critters. One even got whiskers! [update] I've played around with some metallic hues. So far, the original Warploc Bronze is still my favourite... How about metallic black as a base color and some highlights in brighter metallic tones? ...looks like I'll have to do a few more!

Just outta curiosity, where did you get the inspiration for putting some crystals in the elemental?

Just outta curiosity, where did you get the inspiration for putting some crystals in the elemental? Not really sure... I think I saw it somewhere around here, or just on a picture. For me, earth elementals and gems go together like drow and poison. Or gnomes and pranks. Just one of the count less tropes of the genre.

Sweet Earth Elemental! Lots of earth elementals with gems have been cropping up over the years... here and the FB page, even some of the collectible earth elementals minis have some gems. I would definitely follow suit, especially for a big one. Put the players in a dilemma. Really love your Elemental, tauster!

Spontaneously, I would say that the number and maybe the kind of gems is somehow linked to an earth elemental's age. Or maybe it's their kind of nobility?

Or certain gems could be their weakness. The ruby near the where the heart would be, once broken, would shatter the elemental. Or you could have the inner parts of the elemental be a major diamond, say somewhere around 10,000 gp at least. Killing the creature could result in smashing that diamond into smaller almost worthless gems. So how do you kill an elemental when you can't just blast it? Oh, the inner turmoil of the greedy.

Great ideas! I love monsters with built-in loot! Here's another one: 1) The Shatter spell could be used to greater than normal effect, provided the caster makes a successful Spellcraft check (DC depends on CR of the elemental) to get the natural frequency of the gems right (bards would have an easier time). --> The elemental crumbles without getting one hit. 2) An optimal spellcraft check results in the caster exactly meeting the frequency of the heartstone, shattering only that (thus killing the elemental) and leaving the other gems intact. --> More loot!

Reason I asked is cuz my earth elemental had crystals in it. I'm sure I am not the first to do so.

I was thinking along those lines Tauster. If a shatter spell would be crippling to an elemental with those stones in it, why wouldn't a mage just cast away? Because, perhaps, the shatter spell would also destroy those crystals that can be used to augment natural based spells. But I do like the idea of finding the natural frequency of the monster and watch it shake to death. Or maybe a sorcerer could learn to control the heart stone and, thus, control the elemental. Of course, the elemental isn't going to like being controlled...

I got a new load of crafting materials from th construction site! Most of it will probably go into the Dwarven Forge project. That's just today's haul. In the last few weeks I found almost on a daily basis stuff I simply couldn't bring myself to throw away... I don't have ideas for all of this stuff yet, but they will come.

I don't know what those bits are, but they are awesome! I wish we were neighbors so I could stop by to borrow a cup of bits

Let's wait until we've moved in. By then I will have piled up a mountain of crafting materials. It still won't make sense sending this junk by mail from europe to your place, but whenever did crafting have to make sense?

Those things in the bottom left hand corner would make great low-walls or barricades for scifi gaming... would love to know what they are.

I've got lots of round pieces (7 cm diameter, 22 mm and 8 mm thick) sawed out of soft wood fibreboard (wall isolation) and try to find things to do with them... Since they are slightly textured on one side, I'm trying stone and metal paint schemes. Lets see how this turns out... This stuff weights practically nothing, so using it as bases isn't really an option. I think they might work as flying platforms. Imagine the enemy homing in on flying platforms made of massive iron! Of course equipped with lots of sharp and pointy (don't forget rusted!) things all around... And then there's this 1m wide mesh... Dunno if I need the whole roll, but I suspect there will be enough pits and pieces left over to craft for years. Only... what would you do with this stuff if SciFi isn't an option???
