I got a whole box with undead bitz for a steal - yay! That's about half of the haul: Now I wonder what to make of this mountain of undead goodnes... My first idea was something along the lines of an undead abberation; an amorphous mass - like a gibbering mouther but with lots of skulls and boney arms & legs... ...oh, and some cool gravestones. I already have several of these, but with the additional ones, I could make a really nice cemetary. The challange is not to make such a terrain piece, the hard part is to make it in a modular way...

I'm really sorry for bragging, but this simply has to be shared. I've finally started building our house (the largest crafting project I'll ever do...), so you can guess my thoughts when I returned from work this week and saw a mountain of pink foam waiting on the sides. I hope that there will be some scraps left. If not... I can always set some aside, right? Can anybody please tell my why I feel bad stealing from myself?

The lava terrain strips are coming along nicely. Yellow spraypaint (after the whiteglue had hardened of course, so that the spraypaint didn't eat into the foam), then orange and red drybrushes. After that, a metallic black drybrush - I just feel that a slight metallic glint would be cool for just-hardened lava. Although 'cool' might be the wrong word. The metallic black is still wet in these pics, but it will have a definite sheen even when dry. Interestingly, when taking pics with the flashlight on, the reds are showing much more than without flash...

Looks 'cool' yet I get a more sulphuric vibe of it than a lava vibe.

...dried: It's way too light for my taste; it should be a much darker black. The reflectiveness makes it hard to photograph; in reality it looks more like graphite than basalt. I should have used pure black in the first step and then added a second layer of metallic black. I gave it a second layer, stippled on with a very large brush. Tomorrow I'll see if it worked out. Warning: Don't do this with expensive miniature colores like leadbelcher or whatever metallic black you have! I think I would have emptied three to four GW pots by now... I could afford painting such a large area only because I got a 500ml bottle for 3 €. An alternative to metallic black color could be using a flat black and then adding a silver or - better - pearlescent drybrushing.

2nd layer metallic black has dried, and it looks a bit better (i.e. darker). The seams stand out wuite a bit, but I can live with that. I don't know what to add or change, so I call it finished.

I completely forgot to share the finished Totoro...

Not something I'll try out soon, for several reasons, the two most important are - total waste of a perfectly fine water melon (but coming from a guy who builds terrain with pasta, not a very convincing argument) - I don't have a sufficiently hot heatsource.
But still, I'm really fascinated with those shapes, so... can we come up with less complex ways to achieve something similar?

Use molten lead -- free from automotive tire shops, lead tire weights. They melt at around 700 F. Be careful, however, as the moisture inside the watermelon will cause gaseous eruptions from the hole... Wear welding gear: leather gloves, leather apron, denim pants, leather boots, and a face shield of some sort, preferably metal, or glass. Best of luck. Cheers!

Only thing molten metal I've ever seen poured with a similar effect is into fire ant mounds! I think they were using molten aluminum.

After watching Drunken & Dragons' Dwarven Battle Cube episode, I was highly motivated to blatantly copy that thing very inspired to make my own versions... I ended up playing around with a plywood triangle and making some more swooping plastic bottle strips (you never know when you'll need them!). The idea behind the triangle is that I want to have some abstract geometric shapes that the players can't immediately associate with something already known from the game. Styrofoam wrapped in aluminum foil and some chaotic hotglue designs. Plywood scrap glued to a neodym magnet... ...plus some metal scraps glued to the sides, so I can add magnetised stuff during the game. Based black I'll paint the triangle in shades of silver and the battle cubes... probably in a dull iron black with some dark golden highlights. Oh, and did I mention that I plan to add lots of weapon bits?

When you add magnets to you works using hot glue, do you only use hot glue? If so, ever have one come lose? Do you rough up the magnets at all? For some reason, it seems like hot glue wouldn't really bond with the magnets. Great stuff!

For some reason, it seems like hot glue wouldn't really bond with the magnets. Great stuff! It does bond, but not extremely well. Sometimes one hotglued-in neodym pulls another one out of its hotglue bed. In these cases I re-glue them with superglue. What also works is sealing the magnet in with a very thin hotglue layer, but you lose quite a bit of magnetic pull that way, so I do that only when nothing else works.

Just stumbled over a posting by grandinquisitorkrisusing my calipers on the screen , and adding in a bit for the pose , the action fleet one is 84% as tall . and check this guy out , his videos are in spanish , and his stuff looks like it should be horrible as he is putting it together till you see the finished products and then its like WOW , i need to try that ! i thought about your SW build out since some of his stuff would look good as filler terrain and factory industrial . That's one of the best kitbashing and frankensteining tutorials I've seen in a long while. And it reminded me that I have a dozen beyblades (the round toys he takes apart in the first half of the vid) waiting in a box. My intention was to make silicone-and-cornstarch molds with them, but I never got the time as there were always other projects pushing themselves to the top of my to-do list. Maybe soon...

Based black, plus a heavy metallic black drybrush. Looks pretty harmless right? Wait until you see... ...it's angry brother! Drybrushed with Citadel Golden Gryphon and Boltgun Metal: Magnetized weapon bitz for flexible use:

Another longterm project almost finished: I converted (unbased and repainted, really) a cheap Barbi Q mini from the Wizkids series (chekc them out, they have hilarious stuff!) into a female flame-blooded, fireball-with-face-throwing hot chick. From this... ...to that: I might have to repaint her eyes, as I don't really like that look. She's about twice as high as a human-sized mini, so either we ignore that discrepancy and use her as is or she'll be used for larger beings, which is easy to explain away.

Got the magnetized animated metal thingie with pointy things ( part 1, part 2) finished: Not a really overwhelming craft, but useful to get an idea how this combination of texture and colors works. Plus, I expect to use those magnetized weapon bits in some future crafts.

A treehouse for my 3.5 year old to play with. I guess I can borrow it for some of the rare game nights we have... A can of potato chips, two scraps of laminate and some strips of wood and a handful of wooden beads. Not much to write about, I guess the WIP pics tell it all. Basepainted black... ...and painted: From above I went over it with an ivory drybrush, but I'm not sure it got better. That's for my son to decide in the morning.
