The evening started out promising: friday night, with nothing to do but blissful crafting. For an hour or two, I started with something I wanted to do for a long time: Lava terrain. I have a box full with scrap pieces of foamboard in the corner, gathering dust for months now. I took about half of that stuff... ...and peeled one side of the paper off: Hmmm... these curly shapes... could be good for something. Waste not, want not. Then I mangled the foam with my texturing bark piece. Warning: For such a hat large area, you might consider wearing protective gloves as the bark bites into the hand as it does into the foam. Which isn't fun after a few minutes. In the end I had a large area of modular pieces that don't take up much storage space. The only problem is a slight warping, but with a few days fo rest under some kg of pressure, that should be fine. Next step would be applying a protective coat of undiluted whiteglue, which would have to dry overnight. ..but then the game changed: When some friends were suddenly available for a game tomorrow night. The right combination of characters for the dragon hoard combat room session I've planned for weeks now, and was only missing the main enemy... and the Red dragon had just received it's first layer of basepaint yesterday. Long story short, I switched projects and finished the red dragon repaint in a speedainting session. Considering the short amount of time, I'm quite happy with the result.

I might have posted this before, but I'm not quite sure... I think these little pots cor cosmetics work great as heavy bases. www.ebay.de/itm/261650425060You can even use the pot as a large base and the lid as a small base. That would give you 100 bases for 15 €...

Well, poor Totoro fell victim to one of the most dangerous monsters: The mighty Procrastinator. More than a month of sitting on my desk and... gathering dust. At least I can bu sure that the milliput really had anough time to harden. Finished the missing fur, did the impressions in the breast (with a pen) and cleaned up all that needed cleaning up. Now it has to harden (hint: decidedly less than a month!) and then all I have to do is painting. Which is a bit of a challenge, because the original Totoro is, like many Japanese comics, quite monochromatic. The only (fan?) illustration showing a bit of contrast is this. And what to do with the small lump of leftover milliput? Easy. One can never have neough mushroom stems. Or tentacles.

Basepainting... ...slowly looks like the original:

I got some very nice ruined bases on ebay: I always adored that 'broken statuary' style, and the tiny script is an added bonus. They were relatively cheap and I'm happy they include two larger ones, but I'm a bit at a loss regarding that whitish stuff the last crafter has put on them... My first thought was to make it ice, but I don't really need arctic terrain, in none of my games. Fungoid growth might be an option, but as usual, I don't have the slightest idea what color scheme that fungus should have... Which leaves me only with the idea of some alien/chaos infestation. I've done a lot of fleshy Torog-themed terrain, and even though though that was as not smooth is this one, it could probably complement it somehow. Peeling this stuff off isn't an option, btw. Anyone else having any ideas?

just stumbled over an online auction picture of some old WH mummies and realized that these could probably be made totally easy: simply cover an old, unwanted miniature (or a wire skeleton) with hotglue. anybody wants to give it a try?

Way back, I made a bunch of pasta flowers, plus some flying octopi (see here, here, here, here, here, here and here). The flowers turned out cool, but the squids have been gathering dust on my table for months now. No more. I tried to emulate a roughly similar color theme as the Zombie Octopi from the Freebooter's Fate series: colors used: Basepainted the pasta body with Macharius Solar Orange (which is also great for rust effects, btw) Basepainted the tentacles with Hormagaunt Purple I skipped a few steps and forgot to take pics. - drybrushed the tentacles with Tentacle Pink - very lightly drybrushed the body with a mix of white and orange - washed the tentacles with Baal Red Later I also lightly washed the body with Baal Red; this is drying right now. I'll probably add a clear high gloss varnish, at least to the tentacles, and probably also to the body...

Looks good, Tauster. They got a real creepy look to them. Don't really wanna eat that type of pasta now:-) On the plate they are just ordinary pasta, but right before you put them in your mouth, they transform into these abominations.

Howdy, Dang dude! You made my mouth fall open. The octupi are the real deal... EXALT BUTTON!!!, Kev!

Thanks for the priase, guys! I finished the three (and realized that Octopus is the wrong name, they're more like Triopus...) Honestly, I don't really like the orange bodies... My gut feeling is that they would work better with the same color scheme as the tentacles, but the problem is that the bodies are smooth, and won't provide texture. I could add a thicker layer of color and hope to make some texture, but...

Well, I think the coloursceme is great. I really love the design. Now I'll need to pay more attention when shopping for pasta:-)

Here's how the 'all purple' color scheme looks like. I like this better then the orange ones. I ran out of critters to paint, so I had to make new ones. First I played around with a new pasta that I hadn't used before, but didn't really get something I liked: Then I combined several kinds of pasta - the more, the merrier... ...turns out that was the right decision! I have the feeling that a black basepaint with drybrushing & highlights in bright colors might look cool, almost like a glowing effect...

WTF? Those new critters look amazing! Can't wait to see them painted up. The purple color looks good, but I still really like the orange and purple, because they look good together:-) I'm off to the pasta stash to see what I can find:-) Thanks for the inspiration.

Dark Red basepaint... ...and some more colors. Guess I'll put gloss varnish on when it's dry. A dark variant: Black basepaint with two different blues, plus a pearlescent finish

I liked the dark variant so much that I made three more. Now I have a quartet of lightning-wielding shadow-squids. And their leader even has eyes! He's got a heavy squint, so his lightnings are prone to miss the enemies and hit it's own people - which immediately retaliate. Battlefield comedy guaranteed!
...in totally unrelated news: I just scooped up two armies of night goblins: over 100 critters, roughly 1:1 archers and spear wielders, for 6 € in total (plus shipping, probably the same amount). Basepainting and most of the blocking work is already done, so I can practice the finer details on them. I guess some of my players will get swarmed in one of the next combat rooms!

Hahaha, their leader looks terrifying:-) But not quite as creepy as the rest of the bunch. Well done, Tauster. From one without decent pasta. The spirals taste good, but for crafting...not so much:-(

And congrats on the steal. Picked up a bunch of archers on the fleamarket the other day, but had to put them down again, cause the seller was nowhere to be found. Damn it!
