I had an idea I think is pretty cool for a trap trigger, so I thought I would share.
The PC's come to a room with a low ceiling and a hole in the floor about 6' in diameter...there is a big ring attached to the ceiling above the hole that looks a like the creatures of this dungeon use to attach a rope to lower themselves down.
This ring is actually a trigger for a trap. As soon as there is enough weight on it...it falls pulling a small cable with it As the PC free falls, the fall will start to slow and eventually stop. What has happened is the PC's fall has actually wound a spring for a trap...your imagination takes it from there

If you want to make it more nefarious, have the cable detach after pulling the spring into its wound position. Then stick them into an oubliette of utter dark. Then fill it with a combination knockout gas/ magic hallucinagen.
Then "wake them up" in a cell, where they bust out and go on a lengthy dream adventure they think is real. Drop occasional hints with dream logic...things that are subtly unrealistic for the characters. Then TPK them (satisfying your inner DM desire to kill them in some fantastic way), which wakes them from their hallucination dream to find...
They're still in the oubliette, with a faint ticking noise coming from nearby. After all, the spring was wound before they fell in.
How long have they been asleep? What does the ticking mean? How long do they have left before the spring unwinds? What happens then? What are these smooth, slender, bone-like objects they feel in the darkness scattered along the floor?
Most importantly, is their DM an evil genius whose vile plans involve tormenting the PC's?
