I was poking around for a Dragon to use an I found some neat one at Michael's they have these hard rubber animals, some cool fantasy stuff as well. Just a bit spendy, but they should also hold up well. -R If micheals is close by, get on their e mail lists. They have a nearly continuous coupon for 40 percent off one item, which you can simply pull up on your smart phone. Pop in one day, buy a dragon at 40 off, the next, some Mod Podge. use the same coupon via your smart phone.

Aww yiss. I would love to see a huge battlefield. Even though it's beyond doing at a cheap price and pointless, it would be awesome! do them in a different scale. I am building 6mm armies for my Tekumel campaign.. really slowly..

I have enough undead and humans to pull of a epic battle scene but it's mainly due to playing kings of war in edition to d&d. Lol

Careful... Building armies is highly addictive! It starts with just, "One army -- that won't cost too much..." Then you fall in love with another, and decide, "My <X> army needs someone to fight against... I know! I will build a <Y> army for them to fight!" Then you decide that the two armies will tire of killing each other, and they will go in search of fresh meat -- and army <Z> is born. It never ends... >;-)
There are many sets of rules out there, for mass battles. However, 2nd Ed. BattleSystem is still available off of e-Bay (last time I checked; published around 1990). It is a complex set of rules, covering everything: skirmishers, formed troops, siege warfare, chariots and other battle platforms, city fighting in close quarters, aerial troops/combat, magic, undead, etc. It is based on 2nd Ed. AD&D, which has support for it with BS-specific spells within the Tome of Magic rules expansion book for the RPG. It includes rules for converting heroes, and monsters, into BS statistics. In the back of the book, is a decent figure painting guide, as well as stuff on terrain-making. They even had rules for magical banners which inspire the troops. It's a bucket-O-dice game, where you roll the appropriate Attack Die (d4-d12) for each figure fighting; defenders get an armor check to see if each successful 'Hit' penetrates their armor. Overall, a fun game, with enough complexity, and all of the dressing of a full fantasy battle game, with monsters and magic galore.
There was a mass battles hardback book produced for 4th Ed., but I know very little about it. Sorry. Cheers!
Correction: I believe the mass battles hardback was made for 3.5, not 4th Edition. Sorry.

It was a wash with thinned black paint. I am super cheap I've never used GW, reaper, or any of the model paints. It's just walmart craft paint. Which does alright but the red takes a lot of layers.

I got so backed up creating Armies to fight my other Armies My Plastic mountain is easily as high as my lead pile. Painting them will be very very time consuming. I totally agree with the "block in the main colors and "Dip away". That said I'm looking at about two years of solid painting. Of course I will end up being diverted by terrain and other odds and ends.
