Thanks again to onethatwas for giving me this idea. I think these turned out well. I wish that I'd been better at keeping the hexes consistent. They often have gaps between the edges. Oh well. Lesson learned. I also flaked during one session and made the tiles with the "rough side" up. Another lesson. I used latex caulk on all the edges and to make the floor/walls rough in spots. I drybrushed the rough spots and the walls. I finished by taking a sponge to the walls with grey paint. I also made some slime/mold/fungus spots on the floors of some tiles using the sponge. I think they will be useful in play.

Really nice, modular, re-usable. Wonderful work. Thanks for showing us how it's done! I love the small, polygon-rectangular hallway sections for merging hex tiles together, with minimal work, and resources. I would not have thought of that. Cheers!

Kick ass! I need to get busy on my own set. Can you tell me the dimensions you used for the hexes?

Kick ass! I need to get busy on my own set. Can you tell me the dimensions you used for the hexes? Per onethatwas, I did 5" edges, 10" diameter. The cave mouths on each edge are 2" wide, with 1-1/2" of "wall" on either side.

Awesome work, love the Hex Concept for Caverns, really really like.

Wow, really good designwork. I bet the hexes make for easier storage as well.

Wow, really good designwork. I bet the hexes make for easier storage as well. The hexes do stack nicely. Need to find a box of the appropriate size to fit them in. Maybe a copy paper box...

Kick ass! I need to get busy on my own set. Can you tell me the dimensions you used for the hexes? As Wilmanric explained, I used 10" by 10" hexes. However its not easy to make these unless you have some geometric know how. Or are really stubbornly persistent. Like me. I made a template on cardstock as follows: I started with two 10 inch long lines, 5" apart from each other. On the bottom line, I measured 2.5 inches from either end, made a mark, and then plotted a line to each end of the second lines ends. Cut out, and... You have a trapezoid. Why a trapezoid? Because if you trace it out, flip it over, trace it again aligned to your first piece, then you get a hexagon. But if you need to make half a hexagon/trapezoid (useful to create a flat edge that can accomodate square tiles you may have or want to make later), or if you need to use it to create other shapes compatable with the hexagon shape, the trapezoid trace template is particularly useful. Enjoy

Enjoy I have a feeling that onethatwas is much better at making hexagons than I am. In fact, my method might just be the reason that my hexes were a bit off. That being said, I cheated and you might want to too! I used MS Word to make a 10" hexagon. It comes with a hexagon shape and I just used the preset and printed it out. I printed it on a whole sheet label and then stuck that to a manila folder. Then I cut it out. Anyway, I thought I'd share. YMMV.

Good job making them, they look like they'll work great for lots of different caverns!

I'm definitely wanting to do a set of these for myself! A question though... did you initially lay something out to where you decided HOW the walls were gonna be? Or did you just create as you go?

I had a trace tool that helped me uniformly create entry ways. But otherwise it was a matter of tracing out the hex shape, determining where the exits should be...then creating a unique rough cavern wall design between about .5 inch to 1.5 inch away from the hex edge (on the inside of the hex trace). Cut, glue, etc.
The only thing that needs to be uniform is the outer edges and the positioning of the exits. For a 2 inch wide exit, they need to be placed 1.5 inches from each corner (assuming you have 5 inch edges on a 10 inch wide hex).
Note that not every edge needs to have an exit on each hex. Seeming randomness is impotant, so the less you stick to a "pattern" for creating these, the better.

I created some "hex paper" over at Incompetech and then I sketched out some "rooms". I've checked them off as I made them. I still have many more to go.
