So I have an idea for a trap not meant to be fatal, but to relieve PC's of armor and other heavy objects.
The thought is: The PC's enter a room with nowhere to go but up. Because there is a hole in the ceiling with a sturdy rope coming down through it.
The rope (Of course) is the trigger for the trap. As soon as there is at least 50 lbs. hanging from it there is a large click and the entrance is blocked by a stone slab falling in front of it and also a spring loaded blade will swing in the room above and sever the rope. Then the water starts pouring in. The PC's can simply wait for the water to take them up to the hole...but sorry, Plate will sink you faster than a boat anchor. Too heavy of objects will have to be left behind.
Would like some help with this as I don't know rules too well...what do you think? Too mean?...I'm sure a levitate spell would work and if they do some thinking maybe they can tie there armor with there rope and then haul it up...just getting them to think is always fun.
The room above will have drainage through a back wall so the water wont fill the second room above.

Yeah good trap, but do you then give them a time limit because, that's something that you would need

Yeah, there are many details to work out...I'll take any advise or idea anyone has to help perfect this trap

Nm, reread the post. Good trap, but definitely have a time limit.

...I like vicious traps, so while it is (as is) a very good trap, a couple adjustments could be made for those who are cruel. Like me.
The liquid could be acidic and corrosive.
The Liquid could be flamable oil (for future flame based traps). Also, because Oil functions differently than water as a liquid, the DC on swim checks can be raised.
After half full capacity on the upwards corridor, flesh eating, dangerous, aquatic creatures could be released.
A channel several feet below the escape level could be incorperated. Once the liquid spills into that channel, another trigger can be activated, causing drainage ducts 10 feet above the floor to open, causing the water to sink again. This makes the exit unreachable (making escape a very small time window available to PC's, as they have to figure out how to "leap" from the water to the escape several feet above where they're treading water...a very hard feat to begin with, made harder as the water now recedes). It also makes getting their heavy gear impossible. Finally, as they have to tread water continuously, their ability to swim becomes harder, making drowning in 10 feet of water a real threat.
Or you can have a trigger that shoots illusory flame from above. Forcing the PC's below water as a second trigger activates, causing a freezing spell to activate, trapping PC's below water as the top layer freezes over (also causing damage to PC's who aren't fooled by the illusory flame). Stop the water 10 feet below the escape level, and watch as your PC's jump up to escape, each failed jump cracking the ice (supposing there is enough to stand on after they get out...if they get out...)

Q: what gaming system are u using? Q: Who are the creators of this trap? of this Dungeon?
Using the Ad&D system ( 2ed rules!) and a dash of DM Shane's Personal Flavor Sprinkles = " At the edge of your light you see an open doorway 30 ft. ahead of you. As you approach, you can pick out a thick hemp rope dangling from an opening in the ceiling. The floor appears well worn, and there are four stone faces, one on each wall. The Closest one to you on the ( south) wall looks like it was once a (* elf) but the features have been worn away. -At this point allow players to react/explore. - Place tile on game table, let players place mini... When trap triggered, close door/slam stone block in place, start the clock. - Take out from behind your DM screen an actual stopwatch, click it, and say" what do you do?" This will set ur players in motion! Q: how long do you want your player characters to live? { Most armor takes but a round to remove, but plate will take 1d4+1 rounds to a max of 5 rounds! Player may halve this amount of time by cutting straps and bending pins 2ed phb p.76}
A: Assuming man sized chactors, fill the room to waist high in at least 2 rounds, this means a fairly quick fiull rate, have stone face mouths open/jaw drops... and out shoots gallons of cold water/ warm salty water / whatever is approp.
If you want player to drop heavy equipment be sure that you are using encumbrance rules prior to using this trap or your players may get perturbed

Great tips Shane, thanks! I will be running this trap in 3.5 D&D Greyhawk or perhaps my own world I'm still not sure which dungeon on the adventure I am going to put this in yet, so I cant answer your second question...but I am thinking more and more of making my own map, because the history I want to tell is of two great wars that happened between the Orcs and the humans. One about 3000 years in the past, and one about 3 generations back from the characters. So on my map I want to have a sub continent inhabited by Orcs with a tiny land bridge to the main continent inhabited by the humans. Elves, and dwarves, though Humans will outnumber the other races 100 to 1. The dungeon will most likely be in Orc territory, but not necessarily built by them

It seems like this can be a lethal trap, but it is especially useful for slowing the players movement up the power curve. Assuming Shanes layout, with the water coming in from faces fountains on the walls, the force of the water can complicate their doffing of armor. It can scatter any loose equipment, and confound attempts to tie off equipment. If you give the sound of war drums right after the trigger, but before the water, you can get the players to have weapons in hand, and make them test to hold on. near the floor, under the faces, could be small water sluices that will eventually drain the room (I like traps that reset) where lost equipment gets lost down a drain. (seems like a trap that could pay for itself..).
But I also like to give players clues and credit for team work. I like the trap. If you want it deadly, along the verticle shaft, place spears, or blades that strke out as teh water reaches them, which means at the height the players are treading water.

Do the players get a chance to get the heavy loads back, because my players would be furious if they couldn't get it back. I would have them go through the dungeon without it but let them retrieve it one way or another.
