A few classics I've read here and there: Always one colour but never one size Fixed to the ground yet easily flies Present in sun, but rarely in rain has theatrical charm, and never feels pain
A Shadow
A seething Sea, Dangling between heaven and hell, bubbling as hungry eyes look upon.
A cauldron of soup hanging in a fireplace. So, it could be the hint for the adventurers to check the cauldron.
Clad in mail, never clinking, never thirsty yet always drinking
A Fish
I am one of eight, Guards of the king I stand before the Queen, Into Battle we sing To war we advance, never fall back, striving forth, we lead the attack.
The Queen's Chess Pawn

Here's an old one from Kings Quest VI, so I guess this is also a spoiler for that too. A bit of context that you may want to use in your game. In Kings Quest VI, you had to enter the Lord of Death's throne room. Guarding it was a living door. He would only let you through if you answered its riddle, and you only got one chance, for if you answered in correctly, it would eat you. The door is sure of your failure, as the answer is one thing not found in the realm of the dead. The riddle: My First is foremost legally My Second circles outwardly My Third leads all in victory My Fourth twice ends a nominee My Whole is this doors only key

So I came up with a riddle for my campaign...I posted awhile back somewhere on this sight that I got an idea from a DM Scotty vid to have a giant floating Chrystal that will show a location on a map once another portion of the party places a mating smaller Chrystal on a certain pedistal during blood moon light.
The pedistal will be called the alter of light which they will need to locate...it will also mention an Elvin Kings cave which the party will has already discovered by this point...this is where the large Chrystal hovers and there is a giant map of the word on the walls. The ultimate goal of the quest is to save a dying tree that holds in the balance the continuation or destruction of the world....I know...can you say cliché?
Anyway...here is how my riddle goes which will be on a scroll when the party finds the smaller Chrystal.
The light of the small, gives eyes to the large
The alter of light, shall be your charge
The dying moon light, shall show the way
And give the walls life, in the Elven lords cave
For only then, shall you be blessed to see
The holy ground, bearing the holy tree

Completely revamped my riddle.
The essence of Aiden, secret to all
Can only be found, on Addallmin’s wall
On the Altar of Light, the small will be charged
& the light of the small, shall give eyes to the large
The way shall be shown, the location revealed
Yet the passage is blocked, and it shall not yield
Play me the sound, oh so sweet and so grand
For only Fallore, can summon my hand
Behold I come forth, and pay thee thy toll
Then Aiden shalt finally, bear thee her soul

I have a collection of small riddles, but they are originally in german, so they don't translate very well... The more it gets, the hungrier it becomes. But when it devoured all it had, it dies. What is it? {--SPOILER--}Fire or a flame My face is adorned with someone else's light, but if this stranger's light does not fall on me, you cannot see me. What am I? {--SPOILER--}the moon WHat is falling all the time but still does not move from its spot? {--SPOILER--}a waterfall There is a house made of walls that sometimes can be penetrated with bare hands, but sometimes cannot be broken. Its tenants are all silent, although their mouths always move. {--SPOILER--}the sea I was a strong one, but martyrdom made me so weak that a breeze will carry me away. Put water on me and give me to the fire, then I give my strength to you. {--SPOILER--}grain -> flour -> bread As long as I stay with my master, I am of no use to him. As soon as he gives me away, I serve him. {--SPOILER--}Money It's alive without breath, as cold as death; never thirsty, always drinking, clad in mail, never clinking. {--SPOILER--}Fish I go 'round in circles, but always straight ahead. I never complain, no matter where I'm led. {--SPOILER--}a wheel There is one above my head, where none should be, or maybe two should stand. All in white I am innocence. {--SPOILER--}Unicorne
