I was inspired by this picture (from Volo's Guide to Monsters): Started with a ball of tin foil. Covered it with tissue and water/PVA to desired size. Then a few veins with hot glue to give structure (and strength). Finally covering it with a few thin sheets of tissue paper (ripped apart to single layer) and PVA. Kinda brain-like shape - any big holes got a dab of glue.

Then a base from some MDF (10 mm or so). I used a drill bit with like a round saw blade on it (with about 50 mm inner diameter - maybe 53-54 mm hole size). Then I hollowed it out a bit with a Dremel tool - I had an old broken sanding bit that worked fine to dig out a hole. Then a bit of scrap plastic rod in the middle hole:
Then some gritty sand/tiny rocks - and pure PVA in the bottom to seal it. See my Corpse Flower project for another use of the MDF.

A bit of spray paint, some wash and some varnish: And a very blurry one of adding a thin layer of a skin color: More colors to follow... Also tentacles :-)

Very nice!
One idea though: If you don't mind taking it once again off it's fly stand, you could make some tentacles from something sturdy (hotglue-covered wire for example) and use the dangling tentacles as fly stands.

You actually almost predicted the next step (once I'm satisfied with the paint) :-) One crucial part of the inspiration was a video with DMScotty, where he made tentacles by spraying hot glue directly into water. So I have a few lengths waiting. And the brain is only pushed onto the stand.

Really cool sculpture. can't wait to see the final result. my friends in my game are fighting the ultimate elder brain, one that has gone insane on feeding information. its became a god in my world. heres what it looks like with all its slimy glory ! mind you, its a picture, not a sculpture !
Really cant wait to see the final product as i may also do one based on yours after that. i like mind flayers and elder brains.

I've given it some veins and brought it back a little towards the purple with a glossy wash. Then I popped it off the base and started to install the tentacles. This is the technique from DMScotty that actually inspired this creature-craft. It's strings of hotglue extruded directly into cold water. With a bit of practice this makes quite good stock for tentacles :-) Then I punch and file a small hole and superglue lengths of tentacle into them. Back on the base it starts to look alien.
