Tried the search function, looking for the term, SLA, but got nothing but page-after-page-after-page, of nothing specific to SLA. So is everyone here using an extruding 3D printer, or is anyone going the messy route of using SLA/DLP? I am particularly interested in finer detail than what I see extrusion printers producing, at this time. Input would be much appreciated.
Not really interested in printing buildings, nor dungeons, nor other large things. I am very interested in printing the 350 monster figures from the Monster Manual, which are available as free .stl files, however. With that in mind, I believe an SLA/DLP printer would be preferable, for my intended purposes. Thank you. Cheers!

Well, for what it's worth, I recently purchased a SLA printer to try out, but I haven't gotten around to using it yet. It took me way longer than it should have to assemble it. Not because it was hard, just I didn't invest the time to do so. Now I haven't fired it up, but since you asked I will try to make some time to get it going and print something for you to look at.

I use an FDM printer but I recently got some print samples of an SLA printer and they are ridiculous, smooth, detailed and something I would never be able to achieve with an FDM printer. I don't know if they did any post process stuff, but the model is incredible.

SLA is falling so quickly it doesn't make sense for me to purchase one now. It isn't that I don't have the money, but I don't like wasting it. You can buy so many finer detailed models for the price of an SLA type printer, it isn't worth my time. Also the fluid is too expensive and also falling daily in price. The ones that are cheaper are only at a finely tuned filament level.

This is the big thing for me, the resin/fluid stuff is way too expensive and the trade off (especially for rough fantasy type stuff) isn't worth it. The models I received were incredible though.

for what it's worth, this is the machine I bought a while ago and still (yes still) haven't had time to use.

well, for those still interested, I finally got this thing going. It was a bit of a learning curve due to the fact that they don't offer a slicer. You have to use Cura and some custom profiles...blah blah blah... anyway I got it going, and it's amazing!
There is no comparison in detail, especially with small models. I wouldn't recommend it for tiles or larger items, but if you download minis online and want to print them, get an SLA printer.

Very much looking at this now that the price has gone down below $600. I am wondering about what to use for the software since everything I do now is free software.

I suspect SLA and DLP printers are following the pricing model for inkjet printers: the profit is not in the printer, but rather in the resin sales, after the user has purchased the printer! It seems all too logical.
I've been hoping the price of inkjet ink cartridges would drop, over time... Never have! I suspect the price of SLA/DLP resin will never really drop, either. Very disappointing. I hope that I am wrong -- I really hope that I am wrong. Cheers!

It takes less resin since ideally you do hallow prints for a lot of the things you make. No one has talked much about the other areas of design, like having a drainage hole and other things that make it harder to design. You can buy an awful lot of unpainted figures from Nolzur and others for $600, like 240 of them. I never truly understood why people buy Dwarven Forge either for the prices they charge, but if you have money to burn.

well, I haven't done the math, but I'm sure someone out on the internet has. I know for the FDM printers some one has. If you want this strictly for minis, then that certainly would be worth finding out. I like mine because I can make more than just minis with it, but that's just me.

If you find something then let us know, been eyeing the Anycubic 3d DLP printer for some time now - the only two cons other than the price is the toxic resin and the apparent lack of Linux software. Where the first is something I could learn to live with the 2nd is a deal breaker.
