Hello from South Africa!
Advice sorely needed.
I only started crafting a week ago.
Our group has always , and I do mean always relied on a white laminated battlemap. been playing for 10 years like this. Also , no Minis, we use dice to represent everything. Been drawing and wiping for a looooong time.
in SA there is not a lot of Geek and nerd stuff happening, its a VERY small community, there is maybe 1 hobbyshop per Big CIty.
Our Main DM then wipped out these painted tiles several sessions back and asked that we all go to Hero Forge and craft minis.
Did that, and suddenly after all this time it was like a new game, I really realy liked this, it just added a new dimension to the whole game.
I am the Back up DM, so I have my own campaign that I do when the other DM is swamped or cannot run or just wants to play as well.
So during December leave I decided that I want to get into this thing.
Started youtubing and the first video I watched was BLACK MAGIC CRAFT and basically watched alot of his stuff. Those tiles look amazing, off I went, got the wrong foam, because most shops were closed during the holidays and I got this thick rubbery black foam that is probably not the same pink stuff that he uses. Got the wife to help as well. Cut some tiles, and they look OKish. Only Saw DM Scotty and DMG and Wylochs vids after we started cutting this damn rubber into tiles, modge podge and painted them. Didnt make alot, but they have taken freakin forever to do.
My Question is this.
Should I start with the cardboard tiles and then when I get better do the foam. or should I just stick with the foam and duke it out.
WHat are the Pros and Cons of Foamboard vs Cardboard?

Howdy,
Cardboard is good for quick results, but foam can have way more fine details...

I would say to consider the resources and the project. If you just need it for mounting (a surface to stick something to) go with the cardboard. It's cheaper, easier to find, and less likely to curl. But if you're looking for a surface to shape and sculpt, it's got to be foamboard. I know sculpting seems intimidating, but it really doesn't take much effort or skill to get a beautiful piece. This is a photo of my foamboard tiles.

For many people, cardboard is more easily obtained than foamboard and is usually free. Dollar stores in Canada and the USA sell foamboard cheaply, but it isn't as readily available in some countries. Note that the cardboard used by most of the crafters you mentioned is double-layered. That is, there's a flat paper sheet, a corrugated layer, another flat paper sheet, a second corrugated layer, and a final flat sheet. The double layer helps reduce warping when you glue and paint it. It is most often used as shipping boxes for large home appliances. You may be able to get it for free from an appliance store, because they often unbox their inventory and have to dispose of the boxes.
If you can only get single corrugated cardboard, then glue two sheets together with the corrugations perpendicular to each other and use that.
It's easier to get some 3-dimensional detail with foamboard. Cardboard tiles will only have painted detail unless you cut out thin card and glue it on as Wyloch does. It's simpler to just paint the details, but it's not too much harder to impress them in foamboard, as bobtheskull pointed out.
Since it is possible to use pieces made from a variety of materials together, it's fine to start with cardboard and add components made from other materials later.

Very cool!
Whats the texture on the square columns?
Any plans for walls or do you use negative space for that?

From the sound of things, the foam you got was craft foam. It's not that good for tiles, it has a lot of other uses though.
Also, most of what Scotty uses is Foamcore which is very different from foamboard.
Foamcore is a foam that's easy to texture and work with, but it's clad in paper that sandwiches it.
Foamboard is a more solid foam that usually has no cladding. It's not so good for a lot of the detail work, but is very good for more structural work.
Both require you to keep your knife very sharp to cut it, and if you use a high temp glue gun, you can cause some issues if you aren't careful since the heat can mess with the foam.
Both also tend not to absorb that much water into it, which cardboard does since, well, cardboard is a paper product.

erho The Pillars are actually tube light boxes that I have just inverted. Those long white fluorescent lights, they come in long square boxes. I tried toilet rolls for pillars , but I just happened to come across these and they are exactly 1 inch which fits perfectly on a battlegrid. AS for Walls, I feel that they are kind of limiting, so for the time being, I am not convinced of the whole wall situation just yet and as sotf mentioned I got the incorrect foam. Since I have commited to the Foam tiles thanx to the advice I have got here (still got a Meter of rubbery foam left) I am going to basically paint flat pieces of single corrugated cardboard as giant terrain tiles, IE Water tiles and on the flip side Lava Tiles, then gonna make gereen ones for Slime/Acid, and on the flip side of that one Black with little white dots on. Will post that tomorrow in sunlight. I am going back to work on Thursday and then I will probably not have a lot of time to craft since my commute to work and back is about a 2 hour journey to work and 2 hours back again. SO I gotta make hay while the sun shines and craft my little butt off for the time being. I discovered a Foam Factory close by, so when I get a chance I am going to snoop around there.

Thanx @spielmeisterkev! for the IMGUR idea. been struggling to create an account, but finally got it! SO here are the final products, blackwashed, polyeurethaned etc etc. finished it all today. I have 3 types of tilesets , the broken rock/ruins like tile set , the non broken , castle tile set and the wood, and all of the tiles are double sided, so if it is rock tiles on the one side, on the other it will have wood. I just wanted a few wood tiles to make a tavern / inn. for the bar i built Then I had another Idea. SO the "water tiles" are going to be painted as lava tiles on the other side, the big black tile is the base for a lava terrain I want to make and that is what the other water tiles look like on the other side. The idea with this is to have water and lave on either side, then I am going to make a greeen base for sewer/acid, and pitch black and purple for the underdark, and then just use the 3d foam tile to place them on top. In some of the pics I used the wood tiles to build a barge/ship., not what I had in mind when I made the wooden tiles, but hey , it kind of works?? I can just make separate railings and a rounded front part, and voiala! a boat. then, I can make a very big wood tile and then simulate the lower decks. The significant other used some of her beads and stuff to make chrystal balls, looks cool, she is going to build a wizards lab soon, she did the books, she has made a lot of scrolls as well. its back to work for me tomorrow, so it is going to slow down my crafting. where would i go and post new stuff after this initial burst.
