Hey all my name's Lee, I've been a GM/DM for a little over 14 years. I spent alot of my time in my teens designing various scenarios and campaigns. It wasn't until about 2010 I delved into the world of Warhammer 40k(A truly tragic story in of it's own) I found a need for terrain beyond the dry erase grid.
My first build was a 4ft by 6ft 2 story castle type building, complete with stairs and removable levels. I had planned to paint the cheap styrofoam all at once in order to maintain consistency. The spraypaint only succeeded in melting what had to have been months of work. I still continued to play until my army got demolished around 2012, my rp group had since dissipated and moved away. I stopped playing tabletop all together, only keeping a few dice in my stuff. Around 2014 however I found myself stranded in a small town about a 4 hour drive from home. Online dating never seemed so crazy prior to this!
I was staying with a couple friends I had made in my first few months there, before my breakup. We were broke though no xbox, playstation even an old computer to run an snes emu or anything off of! I had suggested DnD to these guys, but the nerd stigma seemed to turn them off quickly. One day I had asked the the question a bit differently "Hey you guy wanna play Call of Duty? but like a tabletop version?"
I totally lied my ass off stating some friends from back home and myself came up with this to pass time. I went to the local library printed paper minis and made bases with index cards. I also using scotch tape and index cards put together several buildings. I made soldier cards that had set costs each player starting with X amount of dollars, Hp was a kill this turn or it resets thing. It caught on, I then threw in a risk element of a map in which you'd take different countries and move the dollar amount around like risk pieces. This caught on as well, then seemingly as I had planned it one day I was asked,"Did you guys ever make a campaign mode?" Ah finally I can put RP into this!
At first I simply played the allied soldiers voices only slightly different from mine. The setting was Vietnam for our "Campaign Mode" and after a few sessions I began to explain we were role-playing a tabletop game, nearly identical to the way Dnd works. Well to sum the rest of this up quickly, I still talk to one the guys and he is a big time Dnd player these days!
It was that experience that fueled me to get back into the game I once loved. Those moments also led me to be more active in making terrain and new mechanics. Within the past few years I've moved from city to city, finally now settling down in my own apartment where I can make and keep things. I purchased a low-end 3d printer I would say I've got down pretty good with the operation end. I've dabbled in 3d modeling over my lifespan and worked mostly construction and landscaping type jobs. Where as in my current state I have no group, I'm in a rather large city surrounded by other large cities so I think I'll be able to find a group easily. That being said I ran across some Excellent examples on the net, kept hearing this name though "DM Scotty" .
A month ago my work season was ending and I wanted to put to use everything I had and maybe have a group with a SICK detailed campaign by the beginning of next summer. I bought some basic craft gear and started writing ideas for story, puzzle and characters. My first full scale dungeon is part way done I was following Bill Allan's video on crafting caverns (another video where DM Scotty is mentioned a few times.) I finally googled that name and found this forum as well as the seemingly endless videos on youtube. My doubt bleeding through on my capability of constructing everything, has dithered to nearly nothing. A great community and pretty simple ideas that come out dope! Some type of guiding light in the dark tunnel that is my quest.
A little on the long side of an intro I'm sure, sorry I'm excited to be here (May or may not be littered with typos). I can't wait to share my creations and see others and possibly even bring some new ideas to the table.
