I'm working on painting some 60mm tall Viking toy figures as Frost Giants -- they match up perfectly to Gygax's 1977 Monster Manual size if a Human figure is 25mm tall. A number of the Frosties carry large round shields. I wanted to put a design on them, but I did not wish to paint the same emblem 15 times...
I searched for a warhammer font, and I found one with a stylized wolf's head. I printed it off in blue and green, then I cut them out, and I decopaged them in place. Seems like it will work well enough. Waiting for the Mod Podge to dry. Will take some photos tomorrow.
Not the best quality, but it looks as though it will meet the GEtGW standard (Good Enough to Game With, at arm's length). Cheers!
Bear in mind, I am an army painter, I go for GEtGW (Good Enough to Game With, at arm's length). They are nothing I would enter into a painting contest. I spend as little time painting, as possible. These figures are just primed with White Gesso, and they have a little bit of paint over their primer, but not much.
I am painting 30 of these low quality, 60mm tall, Viking figures, for Frost Giants. My goal is to play out G2: The Glacial Rift of the Frost Giant Jarl, in full 3D, with around 50 Frost Giant figures, total, for the tabletop. I have fully modular ice caver wall sections, which I will place, end-to-end, to form the rooms, and hallways, in the Glacial Rift. The surface mats are the foam mats, from Harbor Freight, painted ceiling white, then sponge painted with three shades of blue. The cavern wall pieces are about 1/3 completed. The mats were recently 'painted' with silver glitter glue, over the white and blue paint. They turned out quite nice. Now I am painting the cavern wall sections with the glitter glue, as well. I need to finish the Giants, and the wall sections, and then I will be ready to playtest the game.
I learned from play-testing the G1 module, that I really need to just use 1e AD&D rules, or it is nothing like the original game... Not a problem, really. I had hoped to use 2e BattleSystem Skirmish, to speed up combat, but it lost too much in the translation. Besides that, the players would need to learn a different set of rules, and that was just too much.
After I finish the G2 build, I will push ahead on G3: Halls of the Fire Giant King. I will be making 2.5D dungeon wall sections, much like I did for G1, employing the same slotted foam mats, only this time they will be painted like gray dungeons. That is more than a year away from completion. I hope to finish the ice cavern wall sections by Spring of 2018, as well as the Giants' painting, by the same time.
I was planning to play out G2 at Tundra Con, in January, but I fell behind in my crafting... Summer: it has a way of doing that to me. Cheers!
I recently upgraded the ice mats, applying silver glitter glue to them, painting it on with a 2" wide brush. Followed DM Scotty's advice using this technique. I love it! Applying the same glitter glue to my ice cavern wall sections. I've posted photo's of the mats, and wall sections, previously, but I have not posted any photo's with the glitter glue applied. Will have to take some photo's and post them soon... Also need to run a 2e BattleSystem Skirmish game with Frosties, and some pesky adventurers, ruining the Jarl's day!
I have a lot of figure storage. Need more, though. I will have around 50 Frosties, when done. I have around 20 Frosties painted already. Like I said, they are just GEtGW, not painting contest entries, period! I'll probably post a new thread after I run my BS Skirmish game. Too much fun not to... Cheers!
erho: I will once again rise above Lurker status if I ever get back to painting, Real life work transitions... Adulting

sgtslag: Started working on making hills, which match my Tee-Time carpet I use for my "grass mat," on my gaming table, for big battles. Got two long chunks of open-cell foam, from a friend. Used my Proxxon Hot Wire Cutter to make terrain hills out of them.
Jul 26, 2020 20:12:40 GMT
sgtslag: Came up with around 80 hills. Covering them with the same carpet, from scraps. They will match the tabletop, perfectly. Contact Cement, is my friend. Will post on it, when I get the pictures uploaded. Some prototypes done, as proof-of-concept...

Sept 14, 2020 14:16:19 GMT
sgtslag: 50 Hills completed, 24 left to cover the sides on. Hoping to finish this project within the week. Then I'll post a build description. For war gaming, but it can cross over to RPG sessions... They match the ground 'cloth', perfectly.
Sept 19, 2020 19:03:09 GMT
sgtslag: Sorry, randywest, the listed makers are the only ones I know.

sgtslag: Ran out of Hot Glue, with only five hills left to add a skirt to the sides of. Wal-Mart closes at 8:00 PM, thanks to COVID. GRRRrrr! Another 30 minutes of work, and I would have been done: ~77 hills, modular, perfectly matching my table's ground cloth!

sgtslag: Will post a write-up soon, or after next week's vacation. Cheers!
