The idea I have used is a square or rectangle puzzle of different color tiles near a large locked stone door. Typically red tiles, green tiles, blue tiles, yellow tiles, orange tiles, etc.
The color tiles can be random, diagonal lines, or each color has its own area.
One version, detect magic on the tiles, and words are revealed on the blue tiles saying as the characters read across the tiles, 'Push on the leftmost green tile to open the door'.
Second version, all of the tiles detect as magic, and when touched let forth very loud sound effects; like a lion's roar, a dog barking, or a dragon saying 'Are you food ?'.
Third version, or, they are just a distraction. The tiles can sink slighlty into the wall, but they don't do anything. The thief should just pick the lock and open the door.

I usually just reapply more cardboard to the roof and slather in modgepodge.
But to the original post, which Im surprised didnt get any responses;
The tiles all make grinding gear noises when engaged, nothing really happens as its just a deterrent(or faulty ancient mechanics just dont work anymore) IF you're a DM doing it right, the player will spend inordinate amounts of time trying to avoid disaster while you take the time to create the next room or monster
