I am looking for some ideas as to what I should do with this terrain tile. It is solid foam 12"x12". My brother-in-law gave it to me after he was cleaning up the basement. He used to do model railroad layouts. It's a pretty cool piece and I don't want to mess it up. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I added a couple minis for perspective.

If its fr model railroad stuff, the first thing i would do is consider making a clay negative of that piece (roll out a thick layer of clay and press that down into it, creating a "negative"). Alot of railroad set pieces are designed to be modular...some aren't. You can check it out by making a plaster cast out of the clay negative and then, once dry, check to see if the cast and your piece there line up anywhere to allow a cycled pattern.
Worst case scenario you have a plaster duplicate of your piece. Not bad.
Otherwise, from the look of it, I'd call it some sort of rock wall, so you could do exactly that with it. Alternatively, you can make it into a really rough, broken volcanic rock wasteland.

Thanks onethatwas. I really haven't done anything with plaster. But that doesn't mean it's out of the question. I like the volcanic wasteland idea. I wasn't sure if I wanted to cut it up and arrange pieces for the party to walk through like a maze of just leave it together and make it one big hazardous terrain. Anybody else feel free to chime in.

You could lay minis on it when they scale a rock wall to track progress.

Canyon walls. Put a river or ambushable road at the bottom.
Cliffside dungeon build some platforms, rope bridges, ladders , ect make a fun set piece like Goblin Town from The Hobbit.
"You'll be lost and never found down in the deep of goblin town."

If you decide to do plaster casts, you could probably score the plaster when wet to make 2" wide sections and use it for cavern walls.
