In a few months my crew is going to be dealing with an underwater cave system. A blue hole. Rather than laying it out and have them move along the table. I was thinking of having the rooms stack. The character minis would be attached to skewers. One "wall" would be open just as the "ceiling" in most dungeons is. The opposite wall would be Styrofoam that they can stick the skewers in and "swim" through the caves. I would mark the skewers so that they could move both up and down, forward and backward by where they stick the skewers and side to side by how deeply they stick the skewer.
Tell me I'm crazy.

You're crazy. Seriously though, I'm also interested in how to make underwater terrain work, and this could be an interesting way of representing it. Myself, I was thinking of making a multi-tiered complex of standard 2.5d tiles positioned above one another using stackable clear cups. But I'd like to see how your idea develops. I'm also hoping that DM scotty takes my thread on the Wish list forum into consideration and awes us all with his mad gridless skills and zen insights

Foam would come in handy for this...
Oh and yes you are crazy... BUT, us crazy folks have the best imaginations and being normal is no fun at all...

You need to 2.5D the problem. Make vertical horizontal. Then just lay the minis down... far less work

That makes sense. But that still limits movement along one plane. I was thinking the enclosed space of the caves opened the possibility for true 3d movement. Even if its a 2.5d tile to give movement a third axis would be interesting.

well if you use a large box and make a diorama style of scenery but have foam on the top of the box. Use thumb tacks or a nail or something with fishing line tied around it and the minis. That way they would have a 3 dimensional movement though it would be limited to that box.

Ummm . . . I sense wisdom in the words of the DM elders . . . perhaps not spending weeks on a single project for one game is not as practical as keeping it simple and well done.
. . . we shall see. I am also out of couch cushion foam so that might end the thought there not to mention . . . I need to lay some winter desolation on my fellow noble crafters in the December WoCw.

Check out this product, which I think will satisfy your desire for vertical movement/play: Here is my blog page about it, for more information, and a link to the publisher: blog. I made some modifications to the publisher's system, which is why I linked to my page, not his. Cheers!

That is actually very similar to what I was envisioning. I simply was going to use the foam walls instead of the pegboard.
