I am interested in trying to do 3D printing for 3D effects in my campaigns. I already use hirst molds and my own sculpting. I would like some input as what type of printers are best for the money, where to get downloads, etc. Any input will be greatly appreciated.

I'm not deep enough into stuff to have much guidance on what printer's what. As for where to find downloads: there's a ton of stuff (both for gaming and in general) on www.thingiverse.com/.

I purchased an Anet A8 from Gearbest.com, it shipped over from the manufacturer in China and I put it together on my dining room table. The box had everything needed to get started, the instructions were all on a USB as was the programs needed to load up and edit model files. I ordered two large rolls of filament from a local supplier and some blue masking tape. All up, the printer and shipping cost me NZ$340 and the two 1kg rolls of filament cost me NZ$95 (the masking tape was $8).. this is about as cheap as it gets currently, so I am mentally prepared in case the thing goes up in a ball of flames, but so far, so good. I bought model files via DrivethruRPG.com and Fat Dragon Games 'Dragonlock Ultimate" range, today I just purchased a few expansions and the village furnishings set (I am printing a bunch of furniture right now, should take about six hours). As with any sort of DIY kitset product, you get the confidence to play around with it, because you put it together, this is the idea behind the PRUSA model, and the A8 is a PRUSA pattern kitset, so most owners print modifications to their printer and they end up looking quite unique to each person's preferences. Being a Prusa clone, all the settings that work with Prusa model printers work with the A8, so, I didn't have to figure out much, I just eyeballed the print platform (printer bed) level, and started printing models. It works fine, and I am sure there are lots of little tweaks and modifications I can make which will further improve the print speed and quality, but, honestly, it is just fine as it is right now, and I am having loads of fun with it.

Similar to the Dragonbite clips, but with a superior tile design that allows for walls that clip on without overlapping the floor area.
I like it!

I would also like to know what programs work best for creating and modifying 3D printable designs. I am a beginning CNC machinist and know how to write basic programs for CNC and understand how the three axis points work. I have only modified and written programs for CNC lathes though. I have written nothing for A CNC mill and a 3D printer would be the same as a mill so, would like something a little user friendly. I also want to thank everyone who has responded so far for all the help and input.

There are lots of programs that will allow you to create models that you can print. Google SketchUp is probably the simplest to use and it is free. Other programs, such as MeshMixer, Blender, Inventor, Studio Max, and Scuptris have a pretty steep learning curve. Luckily, there are ton and ton of tutorials on YouTube.
In these programs you would just create or modify a 3D model. The G-Code (the code that the printer uses to know what to do and how to move) is written by the slicing software before you print.

I agree with Wyloch.. I like my Maker Select. I believe it is the most supported printer on thingiverse.com if I recall. (Largest group).

I highly recommend the Maker Select 3D. Also, I will shameless shill our products: www.heroshoard.com/true-tilesI purchased the base set in support, but does that mean I have to repurchase the set?
