Thanks for the pics. I never during those times but I have some minis I got from buying figures in bulk. All nostalgia aside, when comparing those old sculpts with newer models, for me the newer minis win. Always. They seem somehow ...clumsy. It's the same with pictures. For me the original Fiend Folio illustrations always lose when compared with 2nd edition pictures. And quite often, those pics lose against later editions. Interestingly the same can't be said for the book content: While I like 1e stuff much less than 2e books and adventure modules, the 3e and 4e stuff (I don't have anything from 5e) seems oftentimes less well-suited to my style of DMing. One exception, at least for me, are the books on the underdark: I like Drizzt Do'Urden's Guide to the Underdark as much as I like the Sourcebook from 3e, and even though 4e's Underdark wasn't a Forgotten Realms book, I still took tons of inspiration out that I could transplant more or less directly into my 2e Underdark campaign. Sorry for hijacking the thread, back to topic!

I have that Roper miniature !! Now just remember that Ropers are supposed to pass for Stalagmites, and marvel at how badly that slug thing with tentacles is sculpted

But, the artists did not have computers to aid them and years of previous experiences, only a written or even verbal description on which to base their interpretation. Each older sculpt helped fine tune newer ones. I collected these over a period of about ten years. Sorry about the blurry pictures. I am using an older iphone and my hands shake.

Evolution, it is a thing of beauty. I remember the collection of lead minis my friends had assembled for our AD&D games, all the substitutions we made, all the times the one giant miniature was killed as it represented this or that boss monster. I could just imagine my young self, staring into the future through some magic mirror, seeing the games I run now, the massive horde of miniatures, the crafted terrain, the incredible book illustrations, the Bluetooth devices and the internet! I can only imagine what the game will be like in another 30 years!

Sorry about the blurry pictures. I am using an older iphone and my hands shake. Don't worry about the blurry pictures. Maybe I just haven't seen it, but I don't know why no one has made a bracket for smart phones to use with a tripod. I actually have 2, a big one for my digital SLR camera and a smaller one that I use for my webcam. While my hands don't shake that much yet, I sometimes take a blurry picture from my phone, just because of the shape. Guess I'm more used to holding the SLR and video/movie style cameras than phone cameras. They are a more recognizable shape to my hands!

VR is already a reality. there is numerous table top games existing where players can literally roll dices on a table. you can have virtual sheets and put down virtual minis from a library. Mike Mearls passes most of his time with groups on the VR systems for 5e. there is even live interviews with Crawfords, Mearls and one other i dont rememeber. never tryed it cause i dont have any VR system here, but i heard it is awesome.
to me though, you can never get the feeling of table top with friends. programming definitely would of made my day easier back in school and the 2E system. if only i had anything else then a smart calculator.

You can get smart phone adaptors for tripods. I have one to use with my Gorillapod tripod. There are some relatively inexpensive options out there. But if all you are using it for is to take photos for this forum, you might have other places you would rather put your spare cash.

You have some LOVELY old pieces. I sometimes wonder if the older minis are only good because of the memories attached to them, but then there are some that are truly splendid pieces without the nostalgia. I love the first bear & the Wereboar. GREAT STUFF!
