Hi folks. I recently discovered DM Scotty's youtube channel and found myself making stuff for my games, I've been into 3d gaming for quite some time using Dwarven Forge tiles and such with my mini's, but I've never found anything to make a quick to set up forest canopy until I saw Scotty's youtube video. I pulled out some giant trees during my campaign night and surprised my players with them. We took a couple of quick pictures during the game. This image is with flash - it shows the trees and a 'flying' kobold up on a stand (I created flat branches with magnets so I could create perches in my trees) I like the look of the "depth" caused by the large scale trees and my players and I really enjoyed the forest battle. (you'll also note a green bread bag clip with SHAK on it (we play Savage Worlds and SHAKEN is a status during combat) that's another kobold up on a perch. The second image is in the 'dark' I use red and blue LED Christmas lights to simulate night or dark conditions, it really adds another layer of fun to the game. In this image you can clearly see how well the torch looks and the looming effect of the trees. I've made a few more trees since I took these shots as well as some ground cover and even a pair of fallen over trees. Hopefully, my players will head back into the forest next week and I'll get some shots. Oh - in case you're wondering, the little kobold on the green top is flying (that's another trick we use in game) and the halfling standing inside of an upside down bottle top has a armor spell on (again, I like to indicate status's and such in game). Have fun crafting!

Love those trees of yours. Did you add any weight to the bottom for extra stability? ...oh, and welcome on board!

I think because I made the roots pretty large they don't require any weight to keep them stable. They are actually pretty solid due to me using terrain plaster along with paper towel as well.

Very nice! I've been trying to get my DM more "atmospheric" for a while. Welcome aboard. Would love to see your dwarven forge stuff as well.

Seriously, in reading my last post, "very nice" doesn't describe it. VERY ATMOSPHERIC! Great work. Just goes to show what can be done and what a cool set piece you can do.

Thanks folks. The LED torch came with one of my Dwarven Forge kickstarters (caverns I think). I'm now eagerly waiting for my foam knife to arrive so I can start making some elevation terrain. I'm also working on some more forest terrain (my group loves it). I'll post some pictures once soon.
I'm really impressed with a lot of the work here on these forums - just awesome and inspiring. Big thanks to DM Scotty and everyone for keeping up the high quality of the work here.

The group discovers a barrow mound deep in the forest.... They notice some bodies on the ground and a rock ring around the mound (sort of like a mini-stonehenge). They approach and when they attack one of the bodies a nearby tree comes 'alive'. It's a giant 'Ent' a keeper of the forest. This one is covered in strange fungus and attacks the group... (a close up of the Ent) A major battle ensues in the darkwood with the party eventually winning... I had a blast making the Ent, I basically made a forest tree out of a toilet paper roll and kept it hollow, then I made the arms out of hot glue and CAT 5 telephone wire. The LED was from a tea light. The cool glowing effect is from my game rooms blue and red ceiling lights (LED Christmas lights). It all added up to a excellent session.

I should have video'd the response from my players when I pulled out the Ent! They knew something bad was going to happen and they were so careful sneaking up to the rock ring... It was a perfect 'gotcha!' moment and we all enjoyed it. I'm going to use a similar setup at a local gaming convention in a few months (sadly I can't bring my lighting effects).
The forest parts that I've made are really great for quick setups - I was able to describe the scene and set it up in about 2 minutes - I did have the parts at hand and had previously set them up in a dry run - so in terms of pacing for the game it was perfect. I really recommend making a bunch of trees for your gaming tables.
