Hi everyone, Thanks for all the support on my first post at DMs Craft. One of my YouTube followers, Peter Cruickshanks (aka Uber Mensch on the Reapermini Forum) challenged me to see what I could do with an LED Tealight, so I took him up on it and here's the result: The Reaper Bones Flaming Sphere LED Tealight HackThe small size of the mini presented a real challenge in terms of packing all the components in, much more so than the Fire Elemental did, but this type of LED base is a good fit for almost all 25mm minis or small scenic items like a camp fire or a magic portal. The simplicity of the circuit means that this technique is less about hacking the miniature and more about how to design a base which also acts as a switch and battery holder. If I had access to a 3D printer I could have designed a pretty sweet base into which you just clip the components... Please Santa bring me a 3D printer... Enjoy

I love the simplicity & elegance of his solution, i.e. replaycing 1 large with 2 small batteries, but mostly his switch idea! But still... I would rather drill a small hole in the miniature and simply but it on top of the original tea light (which would be painted up of course). Yes, that would make the base a bit larger than one grid, but who really cares. I grabbed a bunch of those lights months ago but haven't done anything with them so far. This vid motivated me to get'em started again. Another idea is to leave the original light and instead of using the bones mini (from which I have only one or two, so I'm a bit reluctant to use it for crafting), built up some flames from scratch. Scotty has shown us a great & simple way for transparent flames.

Cool. Takes me back to my standard 6 (year 8) science project!

Thanks Tauster, This hack is less about the mini (after all it doesn't take much to drill a hole in the bottom of a figure) and more about how to solve the switch/battery holder problem for a 1inch base. I'm hoping it gets a good reception tomorrow evening when I cast my first flaming sphere spell in the Temple of Elemental Evil. On the subject of precious Bones minis, checking the link to the flaming sphere in the Reaper store, I noticed that you now get 3 spheres in a pack rather than just the 1 you got in the Kickstarter. DM Scotty's tip would work really well with a transparent ball and hot glue, who knows what might happen if I enter the World of Craft War December contest. I'm glad the vid motivated you to get hacking on those tea lights. Roleplay-Geek

Absolutely cool roleplaygeek. I have a bunch of these for this very purpose but didn't understand how the LED work so was a bit nervous about taking it apart. Your explanation helped me a great deal!
