So, I just sold my custom Conan miniature for 60$...yay me. I did this because I am planning on producing a new one. Here is the one I sold.
I was never super happy with the paint job. There are better pics in the forum. I use the riverhorse guardian "pop" terminator head. The body of Young Wolf from hasslefree miniatures and the sword comes from a 54mm conan walking down stairs. Interestingly enough, the hads of the 54mm and hasslefree 28-32mm are roughly the same scale. Anyhow, I am going to use this thread to post prep construction and painting vids for anyone interested. Yes, I am a conan freak. I plan to use him in my D&D game(Im a barbarian named Conan, real original I know) and in the new Conan board game I just got for christmas.
Here are the component pieces I'm starting with...
So, the body of the first, the sword from the second and the head from the 3rd. I will greenstuff some extra hair. If anyone wants some 54mm conan bodies without swords or a sword hand, PM me and we can work something out. Im thinking 5$ a piece.
Well, the young wolf has arrived. Still waiting on the riverhorse terminator and the 54mm conan for the sword. I've been preparing the body, and I'm looking for some thoughts on the base. I thought the last one was a little boring. I did a version of the 2011 conan standing on a pile of skulls, like the movie poster. The posters from the 1982 conan posters don't have a real "theme" to the scene. If anybody has a thought I would welcome it. I know they are game pieces, but I kind of like the base to tell a story on its own. I hit the crafters equivalent of writers block.
I have assembled the miniature and started to work on the base. I am going for a more "stylized" base for this round, as the original was on a basic rocky base. My version of the 2011 Conan was standing on a pile of Skulls like a movie poster I saw and I really liked the way it came out. Next steps will be to do greenstuff hair and use some liquid greenstuff to fill in the noticeable gaps where the arms were attached. This will be followed by a light tan base coat. I use a Krylon cammo paint that leaves a slightly grittier surfice which seems to allow better grip from the paint and results in a more finished look.
Im actually pretty happy with the way the head and neck went onto the body. This was somewhat by accident. I think, once hair is added, that it will provide an overall better effect than the first. My second version of almost any custom I've done has always been better. I'll post more pics as I get them.
A few more pics of some Minis Im working on. My Conan for D&D is done. Yay! Much happier with this one. Also been going strong on painting the Conan boardgame pieces and Imperial Assault. Enjoy...or not LOL.
Barbarian WIP. The above 2 are from the Conan Board Game. I love undead.
I was going into Tashi station to pick up some power converters.....
I'm working on learning "object source lighting" or OSL. Difficult technique.
erho: I will once again rise above Lurker status if I ever get back to painting, Real life work transitions... Adulting

sgtslag: Still unpacking after moving in October... Too much stuff, crafting materials are mostly still in boxes. Weekends are busy with life, so little progress made. Getting the urge to push through, though, soon. I have several projects waiting...

sgtslag: Started working on making hills, which match my Tee-Time carpet I use for my "grass mat," on my gaming table, for big battles. Got two long chunks of open-cell foam, from a friend. Used my Proxxon Hot Wire Cutter to make terrain hills out of them.
Jul 26, 2020 20:12:40 GMT
sgtslag: Came up with around 80 hills. Covering them with the same carpet, from scraps. They will match the tabletop, perfectly. Contact Cement, is my friend. Will post on it, when I get the pictures uploaded. Some prototypes done, as proof-of-concept...

randywest: does anyone know more manufacturers for 1/72 fantasy minis besides Dark Alliance, Caesar and Elhiem?
Sept 14, 2020 14:16:19 GMT
sgtslag: 50 Hills completed, 24 left to cover the sides on. Hoping to finish this project within the week. Then I'll post a build description. For war gaming, but it can cross over to RPG sessions... They match the ground 'cloth', perfectly.
Sept 19, 2020 19:03:09 GMT
sgtslag: Sorry, randywest, the listed makers are the only ones I know.
Sept 19, 2020 19:03:34 GMT
sgtslag: Ran out of Hot Glue, with only five hills left to add a skirt to the sides of. Wal-Mart closes at 8:00 PM, thanks to COVID. GRRRrrr! Another 30 minutes of work, and I would have been done: ~77 hills, modular, perfectly matching my table's ground cloth!

sgtslag: Will post a write-up soon, or after next week's vacation. Cheers!

sgtslag: Hoping to acquire a Chop Saw within the next two weeks. Then I will cut up MDF into triangles, to form the skeleton of my d20 fantasy world globe... Posting will follow, with how-to guide. Cheers!
