I DMed 1E AD&D from 1980 to 1985. I have endured Zocchi's 2 hour lecture on polydice, and come out of it only slightly singed. I've also played Tunnels and Trolls, Wizards' Realm by Mystic Swamp, and The Fantasy Trip. I'm only good at AD&D 1E.
I made my own DM aids back then, one of them was floor tiles out of manila envelopes.
I have a 3D printer, a ROBO3D $500 printer. I made some sample stuff, and then it got out of alignment. Once I get the insect problems finished, my shed/storage building attracts wasps, I'll get back out there and align it.

Wasp attacks - best work avoidance excuse I have heard so far - it would certainly put me off!
I think you would find D&D 5e a very easy switch. You could check out the on-line articles on the primary differences from 1e to get mentally adjusted, and then try the free-down rules. Although I think the adventure that comes with the boxed set, "Lost Mine of Phandelver", is well worth the price of the set.
Miguel Zavala has a lot of free 3D-print monsters on the website "shapeways" under the nickname "mz4250". Some of them are purchase-only, but a lot can be downloaded free if you do a free registration with shapeways. I think he also has some on Thingiverse, and of course, that's where several people who post in this forum have put up 3D files.

I bought the books for 5E... I prefer 1E after reading the 5E materials. Same with readihg Pathfinder. My remaining players want me to run Tunnels and Trolls though.
Thingiverse I've been on. I did try a fighter character before my printer lost alignment, it didn't take forever, but it did seem that way. The dice towers I looked at there wouldn't fit in my 3D printer's print area. I did find a free program that would slice it into parts... the estimate on print time jumped higher than I felt it should. But that could have been the supporting material needed.
I do have lots of filament, most of it name brands suggested by the maker of my Robo 3D.

Thanks !
My avatar is my only 3d print that worked. After I get the wasps dealt with, I'll try and get the Robo 3D fixed again so the Z axis goes where and when it is supposed to. The cold weather has done them in, but I need to block up the ways they are getting in.
I have about 5 or so full rolls of filament, and I'm looking forward to making floor tiles. Hopefully I can make some that don't take too many hours to complete.

Thanks for the welcome. I'm just getting over the 'flu. I decided I didn't need the shot this year, what could go wrong... I'll get it next year for certain.
