In my opinion? I can only speak to the one I have, the Ultimaker2. Now, it isn't cheap, but I was lucky enough to get one used.$1700 ( now that I think of it, they have a newer model so this one may cost less) I like the heated bed, using abs or pla , and I have fewer problems with leveling the bed. It is enclosed with led lights so you can see what's printing.
What I don't like is the original hot end was a pain to swap tips, so I had to upgrade, and I'm not a fan of the boden tube system. After prints the filament sometime clogs in the tube.
Overall I do love it, and it was fairly easy to get going. Hope that's some help.

Here, watch Wyoch's video about the printer. He explains this very well. Love the video. Although I don't buy Hatchbox PLA, I buy cheap grey PLA from ebay for $15.99 shipped.. Hatchbox is like $25. Never had a problem with the $15.99 stuff, ever.

okay got it thanks again! God I feel like a schmuck. lol guess I have to start somewhere. Cheers! All 3D printers will print an STL file. But you have to use software to "slice" into into dozens (or hundreds) of individual two dimensional layers for printing. The resulting file is called a GCODE file. Each layer is printed in 2D at either .1 mm thick or .2mm thick (layer height). After a layer is printed and dries, the z axis motor moves it up and it prints the next layer over that. The gcode controls all the motors: x, y, z axis as well as plastic extruder motor. It also controls the temperatures of the extruder for omptimum plastic flow. It also controls fan speeds for improved drying/cooling. GCODE is an industry standard for controlling many types of machines, not just 3d printers. e.g. GCODE is even used for CNC machines I believe, for milling metal. Or say with a laser engraver/cutter? Plotters? etc..

I have been looking at 3D printing and how it works for the last few hours and I think I have the basics down thanks to your help and the vid you shared. Much appreciated. it's almost two a.m. here and I have to be up in a few hours. Just got excited about 3D printing. Thanks again.

Cura is okay, but if you have some extra money - Simplify3D is an excellent program. I have not regretted investing in it. Simplify3D
