Hey gang, I've been working on a project to mine all the TTRPG crafting techniques I can from model railroad scenery books available at my local library (a separate thread on those will follow sometime soon!). In Albert A. Sorensen's " Model Railroad Scenery & Detailing" I came across the following, which rang true for me regarding this hobby. Post your words of wisdom on this thread!

Some real wisdom there. Thanks for sharing that.

This is the most affordable hobby I have ever been involved in. Not only do you get the joy of crafting/painting/detailing your pieces, you get to experience that pride and joy over and over again, every time you set up for the next game session.
I would add to that list: [] Recruit A Friend: Teach someone you know something you have learned from your hobby.

Maybe someone needs to devise a way to make ULTRA cheap 3D minis for characters and character sized monsters... and by ultra cheap I mean basically free. It would also need to be relatively quick, so a person can make 20 figures or so quite fast... Mmm maybe I need to get to the drawing board....

I agree with Drathir this is one of the most affordable hobbies one could become involved in. I have more than enough time to spend on it. I have more than enough money to spend on it. The hobby allows one to use thier imagination to its fullest. That can never be a bad thing. I personally LOVE turning trash into usable items. I put this together literally from an old Skoal can , a moldy bath mat and some coffee stirrers. All it takes is some imagination! (And some bleach! Lol!) Attachment DeletedAttachment Deleted I have stuff just sitting all over my "Man Cave" in various tubs begging to be used. The only problem I have is that I live at the crossroads of Nowheresville and Oblivion! Someday......

Ok. I don't know what that is, but I am sure it involves Orcs or Gnomes AND that I must have one for Smite-age...

I was originally not so keen on papercraft, then I gave it a shot and I am hooked on it.. this is not my work, but I am getting very close to making some mega-structures.

My wife thinks I'm a different person since I started crafting--way more relaxed and a lot happier! I am not very good at the "manual arts" but these techniques described by dmscotty and many others here make it possible to create some really amazing things with very little skill. Perhaps the best part of this hobby, for me, is that I get to share it with people who really appreciate it--not just on the forum (which is fantastic) but with my players, who've never seen anything like it, and think that even my humble creations add immensely to their enjoyment of role-playing. I feel like I've finally found a hobby that carries none of the baggage of the negative approach, and all the good of the positive approach. Great post earlteagrey.

A lot of research has been done connecting creating artwork as a form of stress relief and therapy. When I craft, I can like the book excerpt said, shut out whatever else is going on in the "real world" and escape into the one I am crafting.

I suffer from depression. Fortunately I take medications that help with it. When I craft, or paint my miniatures it allows me to focus on something pleasurable. While I can't do it all the time, it helps a great deal. I'm trying to follow a friend of mine's advice: "paint one hour a day." I find I look forward to working on some projects that have gotten bogged down too. Because I'm a parent, I have to split my time between many things as most parents do. The wonderful thing is my kids are fascinated with whatever I'm working on!

I go through cycles of creative outlets in order to keep my stress levels down. As a lifelong Asthmatic (multiple triggers, including stress), I've had to adapt to finding lots of ways to keep stress down so I don't exacerbate my asthma.
On top of that I (perhaps unwisely) got into a high stress career dealing with Parents who have drug, abuse, and neglect problems. It wears people down having to cope with those sorts of people all the time.
That being said, I alternate between craft hobbies, writing (usually self made DnD templates, but also creative fiction), Drawing/painting, and other hobbies that are less creatively oriented (reading for example).
In any creatively based hobby, the same suggestions apply...do it for fun. Which makes the hobby worthwhile at all times. So, keep up the inspiration folks. Not only is it teh awezome, it also helps inspire those of us who need the outlet to make our own lives enjoyable.

I've been making papercraft models for quite a while. About 8 years ago, I made a huge prison from WorldWorks models, I'm going to post pictures of if on a thread in the photos category though and link to it from here.

I have nerve damage and a very severe, painful neuropathy. (Bad enough that they implanted a morphine infusion pump into my abdomen that holds the meds and pumps it via a catheter into my spinal column) Model making, painting and crafting has over the past half decade become both my way to keep my muscles in my hands from atrophying and as my "meditation" time. Without it i'd have fallen of the edge of the world along time ago. It's nice to have a project going, or seeing a cool project here on these forums, that makes me wanna get up and outta that curled-up-in-a-ball state....

It is very humbling to hear these stories. I am glad I was able to inspire you. Oh....NOW he takes credit! But seriously, yes, you've given us a springboard. The first DMSCraft video I watched, I was completely floored. I had always been a gamer (table top and console), and while I always enjoyed crafting, sometimes it was difficult to come up with that one killer idea; the funniest part being that it had never occurred to me to combine them. And now this: a group of people wanting to push their games just a little further, squeeze just a little more imagination out of themselves as well as their parties, and it's largely your fault. Be it "generic" tiles, major set pieces or pieces of set dressing, you've managed to assemble people from across the planet, gave them the ball and told them "Run with it." And they did, every post by every crafter raising the bar just a bit higher, making us all think and reevaluate. So thank you. Thanks to you, DMScotty, for the circle to gather in and every other member on the forum for inspiring and continue to inspire. And I'm done being dramatic. CRAFT ON!

I was jokingly telling my husband that we should keep track of my craft supplies and claim them as medical expenses on the taxes *laughs*
