Spent the day pumping water out of my garage so it didn't back up the drain into my game room. It gave me a lot of time to do nothing so I decided to start printing some tiles. Hard to see because i'm printing with black PLA but working on a set of base tiles first. I love the way the 2.5" tiles line up compared to all the 2" tiles I printed in the past. I don't think I am going to bother painting until I have a large set ready to go.

Hey guys, I haven't got a 3D printer yet but am looking into one for Christmas (hoping Monoprice Maker Select goes on sale for Black Friday) so I've been lurking here for a bit now.
I have a question about TrueTiles though, specifically in regards to modifying it slightly. How difficult would it be to combine the magnetic tile bases this guy talks about in this video with TrueTiles?
I have zero experience with 3d modeling software, but I'm not too concerned with picking it up (self taught Photoshop, Illustrator, etc., so learning a new bit of software shouldn't too scary). But still, given that I'm a hundred percent new going into this, would merging true tiles with a magnetic base be a decent starter project to get my feet wet with 3D printing in hopefully a month or so?
Thanks!

Thanks! TrueTiles design is based off friction clips, but in regards to your question it would be a easy project to get your feet wet, that would also have a few minor hiccups that could challenge you to learn more

TrueTiles design is based off friction clips... Ah I didn't realize that! I'll have to rewatch the videos. I just wanted a way to make the tiles stay together, so if that's the case I can bypass any sort of mod. Thanks for the insight!

UPS can 3dprint and ship. I was pondering having them print one of each piece, then make some molds and cast.

I personally have not dealt with mold making or casting, but my friend has been. I believe he uses regular plaster with HirstArts stuff, and has used both sculpy mold-maker (which didn't hold up well) and the mold-maker stuff from Hobby Lobby.

Actually what I'm wanting to know is when will the scifi TrueTiles be out? That's when I'll be putting my master plan into action (the having someone print them so I can make molds).

I got a batch painted up this morning and have more ready to go when I get them primed. While I was painting my daughter decided it was time to look through the 5E Players Handbook. She fell in love as soon as she saw the druid.

curufin & Wyloch , you guys have really hit it out of the park. Amazing jobs guys! 1000% funded and still going strong. So I have been deliberating on what to do with my already created huge inventory with the old style clips and a thought came to me. Since my reward for jumping on early with a purchase was that my tiles have the older style, what prevents me from glueing those to the new bases and using them? There is a slight overlap which might be fixed with a little sanding. So the tiles would be higher than the other tiles, but if there was a transition base with a gentle slope then it would be a pretty good transition. I was hoping that someone might create the tile and provide it on thingiverse. If no one else does am I legally allowed to post my own transition tile?

Art, you can still use the 'old style' wall clips to connect the new OpenLOCK tiles. If you wanted to, you could glue the new base to the old tiles so the can all clip together. An easy transition tile to use would be to take the Stairs Up file and scale just the Z-axis to 5.35mm (the thickness of the new bases). You have to use your imagination....but something like this: Just pretend the tile on the right is the new OpenLOCK and the stairs are 5.35mm tall.

That's basically all I was saying is that pasting the new bases to the old prints would work and then I was thinking the same thing that using the stairs resized and pasted to the new base would be a transition. I loved the old tiles, but the clips kept breaking so I ended up just placing them on a mat that didn't move. These new clips are obviously an improvement.

I just created my own sloped transition tile. I am sure someone else could have done a better job, but it meets my needs.
