So recently after watching AJ Pickett's videos on crafting Beholders, I got inspired to start crafting my own! To get me started, I decided to do a spectator. Mainly because they're sort of underrated, and it's less complicated. This thread will be filled with the progress of my miniature spectator as time goes on. Hopefully it won't be a very long project, and it will give a few others ideas of their own. This is what I have so far. I compressed a good bit of aluminum foil into a tight ball, then used a carving tool with a round end to help form a mouth in the middle. I then applied epoxy putty to form the center eye, eyelids, teeth, and tongue. Once I finished that part, I made a hole in the bottom to anchor in a piece of fencing wire I had so that I'd have a secure frame for the single tentacle that would be mounted to the figure's base. The wood disc base is one inch in diameter for those who are wondering. The other tentacles are made of foil and were glued on with hot glue after the fact. I plan to use the toilet paper mache method to give this guy some flesh. Then I'll go over the tentacles with sections of epoxy putty to give them a look akin to a scorpion's tail. I also plan to apply some spines on the body to give it more detail. After that, it will be time to paint. Let me know what you guys think!

Love the idea of using one of the tentacles as support for the miniature, I am so stealing that for my next Beholder sculpt. The tongue is a nice touch too, makes it more dinamic. I look forward to seeing this beasty come to life ;-)

Very cool beasty! I realy like how those spikes came out. I think I might have a go at sculpting one in 6mm. Hope you get the funds soon, I look forward to seeing some paint on this baby.
