Hi, and welcome on board. I'm not sure if this is the best place to find a group, but telling us where you live, might help to solve the problem. If it doesn't, a local gaming store is a good place to find players. If you don't have one nearby, there are dedicated forums to bring parties together. I can't recommend one, because it really depends on where you live. If you want to learn about crafting, I recommend to watch some videos. Start with dmscooty www.youtube.com/user/theDMsCraftand then move on to all the other great crafters (biased and incomplete list). Wyloch: www.youtube.com/channel/UCrKJd7jQ989DZvtf5C69mYABlack Magic Craft: www.youtube.com/channel/UC2Rlv-ug-mtnXuMwlpcqFggTheDMGInfo: www.youtube.com/user/TheDMGinfoYoutube recommendations will help you to find more of them. Go forth and craft!

Good on ya.
I strongly suggest you get through a single play sessions first, pure theater of the mind, before attempting to craft anything. That session will help crystalize "what's important" for you, and thereby give you a vision of the things that you want to build.

If you're just starting out with D&D 3.5, I highly recommend that you get the Pathfinder rules and use them instead. They are mostly compatible, but 3.5 has some serious flaws that allow players to create builds that Game Masters can find difficult to manage. Pathfinder fixes most of those, and has some unique elements of its own that I think make it a more playable and engaging game system.
*** Warning! Long, "inside baseball" non-sequitur coming *** If you are interested in the history, Pathfinder is the creation of Paizo, a publishing company that got its start and built most of its market as a D&D module creator. There was a period when D&D's publisher (Not sure if it was Wizards of the Coast yet) flirted with open source gaming, and 3.5 was mostly released as an open source system called "d20" which was then used to publish a blizzard of game systems.
Anyway, WotC decided that was a bad mistake, and they developed D&D v 4.0 as a means to reclaim ownership of the rules, but 4.0 hit the market like a gob of mud because a huge portion of gamers found the 4.0 rules to be too limited, too rigid and too silly. WotC was determined to make the market move to their game model, which they considered superior, so they sold Paizo the rights to do a "new" version of 3.5, which Paizo branded as "Pathfinder." It's about 75% 3.5, but Paizo replaced WotC's proprietary content (like Beholders, Ilithids, etc.) with their own monsters and fixed most of the broken parts of the game.
Pathfinder is what we play. Some of our group is thinking about trying D&D 5.0, but I'm an old dude now, and probably don't really have the energy to learn an entire new gaming system again, not when I still enjoy Pathfinder as much as I do.
By the time WotC moved to 5.0, Pathfinder had actually outstripped D&D 4.0 in content sales, and was generally regarded as the far superior gaming system. I don't keep track anymore, I don't know if D&D 5.0 is winning those folks back or not.

I am a D&D fan boy (old dude as well)I really like 5e. (I play Pathfinder about once a month) each has their pros and cons like anything else. Use what is easiest for you to makes your story live and breath and that your players enjoy. Try not to get bogged down in the old edition wars. Hope you craft up some goodies soon!

I'm curious, did you play 4e? If so, how do you think 5e compares to 4e? I think I've played every version of D&D up to 5e. I almost want to play it just to say I've played them all.

Short answer 4e sucks. 5e Love it! (my opinion) Yes played 4e for a year. 4e and 5e are completely different. I tried 4e for 1 year as a player (2 different dm's) I wanted to like it but nope! I found it became very monotonous and PC's became pigeonholed. 4e super easy to learn, easy to dm. everything else made me want to barf. I found 4e to come down to a tactical (I use the term lightly) board game. Everyone just tries to move into the advantage congo line. 5e I find is super easy to learn for new players, I love the PH. Character creation is soooo easy (you don't have to use char backgrounds listed in the book you can customize everything). super easy to dm. Combat goes smoother and quicker. More opportunity or easier to get into RP. (I know this depends on DM and player preference) you can play theatre of the mind or use minis/terrain. I use both. I always advocate 5e over anything else. Go try out 5e at a local game store or online just to say you have played them all. You may become a convert. Although I am opinionated about 4e if your group likes 4e and you have fun with it all the power to ya! go out there have fun and chuck some dice! I love 5e and I'm doing the same. Friends, gaming, snacks. laughs and dice rolling! doesn't get much better than that! well I'm done whaffling about.....sorry for the rant now stop reading this drivel and go chuck some dice! Happy gaming.

Welcome aboard. nearbygamers.com might help as well as an ad on Craigslist (watch out for the crazies though).

I probably would like 5e. I loved 2e, and a lot of people claim 5e has the feel of 2e. The one thing I am a bit worried about with 5e is all the talk I hear about how it puts the GM in total control again. That's great when you have a good GM, but when you have a GM who doesn't understand the game's purpose (usually by thinking it's a contest between GM and players) 2e could turn into a brutal ego battle.

(But I'm of the school of thought any edition or game will sere you well if you have good players who understand the concept of RPGs)
