Not much time to write this post, but I really wanted to put some shots up of what I've been working on lately. Been a long time painter of 40K miniatures, even though I only play off and on. In fact it's been years since I wanted to play Warhammer 40K. I just can't bring myself to stop painting these lovely miniatures. My favorites have always been the older figures, but i have to say the new box games have been absolutely delightful. OK. Enough waffle. Here are some really old Space Marines. As in Rogue Trader era old. Late 80's old. Next up. some Vostroyan Imperial Guardsmen. These were some of the last metal Guard figures GW ever made. Probably be some of the last guard figures I ever buy from them too. And finally, some Genestealer Cultists from the new Deathwatch Overkill box game. I might like metal figures better then plastic, but I can't really fault any other the latest plastic in these box sets. they're just too nice. That's it for today. I hope to have some more goodies to show off soon. Maybe even some TileScapes tiles for Deathwatch Overkill if I get around to them.

Great stuff. I love the old school 40k metal. I have some myself -- not a nicely painted as this, but passable.

So I really can't call this an Old School 40K thread anymore. I've been painting too many current GW product lately. Here is my Shadow War Armageddon terrain. This represents most of the terrain from the basic box set, along with some Promethium Pipes. I started by painting all the parts in a completely rusted out pattern, similar to the scatter terrain I painted recently. Then I sealed it was Testors dull-coat. Then I did a Salt technique to create hold-out areas. Then I used good old Testors rattle can spray paint to cover everything. Washed and brushed off all the salt, hit everything with Nuln Oil. Lots and lots of Nuln Oil. Finished off by sponging some chipping effects onto the edges and called it done. It's taken me way too long to finish this stuff but I'm very happy with the results. And since I'm working on the terrain I might as well paint up a Kill-Team. These are some more Genestealer Cultists. I wanted to try out something different from the Cultists I showed off earlier. I'm really happy with how this terrain has turned out. It's a pretty long process, but the results work for me. I have lots more terrain to paint up. Now I suppose I should go read the rules.

Great looking stuff!
Can you describe what the salt technique is, or share a link to a tutorial?

Thank you Tauster. The salt technique is a cleaver trick modelers use. I discovered it a couple years ago. Basically, you paint the model with an all-over rust color. Then seal the paint in with some kind of sealant. I use Testors Dull-Coat. Then spray the model with water. Sprinkle large grain salt on areas you want to be rusty. (The salt sticks to the water.) Let dry. Then spray the model with the paint you want the basic color to be. Let dry. When the paint is dry you can brush off the salt with a toothbrush or other soft bristle brush. You should also wash off the salt with water. It takes a bit or practice, but the results are pretty darn amazing.
And Thank you Wyloch. I've been fallowing your decent into 40K madness with great interest. Some great videos lately, and I agree. Everyone should try wargaming at least a couple times. If for no other reason, you get to play with your toys more.

And continuing my yellow vehicle trend, here is the Genestealer Cult's vehicle of choice, the Goliath.
I replaced the heavy weapon on the side with a small slotta-base painted with hazard stripes. The base is removable. So if I want to use a heavy weapon in the future I can. (I still have the twin-linked autocannon around here somewhere.) The cultist with the heavy stubber on top is also removable. I wanted this model to look more like a construction vehicle then a tank. That way I can use it as terrain for other games, like Cyberpunk, Aliens, or Shadowrun. Pretty much any cyberpunk/near future setting.
